Tips to Avoid Backache During Pregnancy
Top Tips To Avoid Backache During Pregnancy
From Magna Therapy
For some women pregnancy brings a beautiful glow and months of excitement, but when back pain strikes it can be a very different story and a time of discomfort and pain.
Dawn Symons of Maga Therapy (www.maga-therapy.com) suffered extreme pain from a slipped disc with her second baby and this led her to specialise in working with women to prevent and relieve the discomfort of pregnancy back pain and stop it becoming a long-term issue after birth.
Problems can stem from a pre-pregnancy condition; it can be pain at the back of the pelvis, (pelvic girdle pain) or the front of the pelvis (Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction). These conditions can be debilitating but Dawn provides measures and treatments that can make life easier and pain free.
Dawn said; “Hormone changes during pregnancy alter our skeletal infrastructure thus giving us greater flexibility. A developing bump changes our centre of gravity, which affects our posture and factors like weight gain, posture and fitness levels can all contribute to pregnancy back pain.”
Dawn’s top tips for a ‘back-pain’ free pregnancy include:
-
Don’t ignore pain- it hurts for a reason so stop doing what is causing the pain. If possible avoid doing it again whilst pregnant and after the birth.
-
If you’re in a lot of pain go and see your GP.
-
Work on your posture. When walking arch your back and swing your arms as if you are marching – this locks your pelvis in a stable position and activates the muscles that stiffen your joints.
-
When you lie on your back put a pillow under your knees as this tilts the pelvis and allows the lower back to gain maximum support from the bed. When lying on your side, place a pillow between your knees, the length of the leg to reduce the ‘twist’ of the pelvis and spine.
-
When relaxing don’t slump with your legs straight without support. Place a towel or cushion under your back, at waist level and place another rolled support under your bent knees.
-
Back pain is often worsened by lack of mobility, therefore, try sitting on a large birthing ball and move a little rather than stopping moving altogether.
-
Dressing can cause difficulties so sit down when putting socks, shoes or trousers on and get someone else to paint your toe nails; both will help protect your back!
One happy client commented; “I had my first treatment with Dawn at when I was three months pregnant with twins. I continued to have regular treatments until 36 weeks which I found enormously beneficial, helping me to cope with the physical stresses of pregnancy.”
