Doll Bones by Holly Black Review

Reviewed by Meresa Bergin

Although this book is aimed at young adults I was very eager to read it, I love a good spooky book. The description of the book sounded by interested and really left me excited to read it.

I found the cover of the book very appealing; the picture of the doll was very eerie looking but compelling and really set the mood for the book.

The book is about three friends Poppy, Zach and Alice who are all different but are bonded by playing make believe games and having adventures. Part of their games is The Queen, a doll that is kept inside Poppy’s mum’s glass cabinet, which the children are not allowed to touch, and she becomes the queen of the current fantasy game they are playing.

Although the book is about all the children, it is read from Zach’s point of view who is trying to deal with his father moving back into the family home after leaving, the book deals with very real issues that young adults can relate to, such as parents separating, making friends and first love.

But do not be fooled, this book is scary! I have read many horror books in my time but there is something about the queen and her story that left shivers running down my spine.

The book also has some amazing illustrations which I found really added to the story and where exactly what I had in mind for the characters.

If you love a good read and being scared out of your mind then you should read this book!

I normally read adult horror but I shall be ordering the other books by Holly Black and cannot wait to tell my reading groups about this author and books.
