We love games at Christmas, and often play some form of game on a screen over the festive period.  Our family have always been a fan of Lego games. We quite often play Lego Indiana Jones and Lego Marvel games, so we were all excited to try out this new racing game.  It didn’t disappoint us!

Downloading the game was really easy, we simply loaded up the Xbox series S, popped in the code and selected which version of the game we wanted to download.  It took around ten minutes but download times will vary depending on your internet connection.  There was minimal set up, taking less than a minute for my eight year old son to be playing the game.

We loved the little videos and cut scenes and the characters created for the game.  The game is really easy to pick up and play.  Meaning that younger children should have no problem with the controls.  In the Body Shop, you can create your own vehicle and make it as simple or elaborate as you wish.  Adding on all sorts of different features and designs. It’s really fun and really easy to pick up.  There are no complicated button combinations, just select the brick you want to place from the menu and then use the controller to move and rotate and place it.

The game seems to be split into two parts, a world exploration and the actual racing.  We all had favourite parts of the game, but for me I loved exploring the Lego world around the base – Don’t drive into the frying pan haha – it reminded me of older games that I used to play as a child, such as Diddy Kong Racing.  I used to drive my car around for hours talking to characters and playing with the vehicles across different mediums so I absolutely love that the creators have added this into the game.  As you drive over a lake, your vehicle changes to a boat, off road?  It changes to a quad bike.  It is so simple, yet so much fun.  You can play in a career mode and level up your driver to become a racer.  During the races, you can earn Lego bricks and in game money to purchase bits and bobs for your vehicle.  If you don’t want to earn them during gameplay, however, you can use actual in game purchases and real money to buy add ons.  We haven’t done this, so cannot comment on that aspect of the game as it is still very playable without this. The races do get harder as you play, which provides a nice challenge for those who are patient and don’t mind keeping at it.  The races unlock as you progress and sometimes you need to complete tasks to level up in the free play area, so that you can enter those races.  It means that you are encouraged to spend time exploring the world as it is revealed to you.

The graphics are fantastic and exactly what you’d want from any Lego game.

It’s the kind of game you can put down and pick up when you have five or ten minutes, and just want to play something quick and easy.  It isn’t a lengthy game which will keep you involved for hours, as because of this the children didn’t really spend too much time on it in one go, just a few races then off.  Like when we play Mario Kart.  We haven’t yet completed the game, but we have only had it for a week!  I’d definitely recommend it for Christmas, for a light hearted and easy game which the whole family can join in with.

Multiplayer mode is great, and means that two people can play at the same time.  The screen is split, so as long as you remember which car you are, you’re good to race! (I am one of those who constantly forgets which screen she’s on, or becomes distracted by watching to see where the other player is)

I’m going to give this game an overall rating of 4.5/5, this is based on myself and my husband rating it at 4/5 but the children rating it at 5/5. Of course, though, it’s the game players rating that counts and although they’ve aimed the game at lovers of Lego games, it is more of a child’s game than an adults, but still very playable.

You can find Lego 2K in your game store on your console. It is available across the console range, we chose the Xbox S, but there was also Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PS. You can find more information about the game, and a purchase link here https://lego.2k.com/drive/en-GB/
