As a parent, I am always on the lookout for toys that my daughter can play with independently and provide more than just a few minutes of entertainment.
Being on the wrong side of 40 I remember having Sylvanian Families as a child. One of my good friends mentioned to me that she had retrieved her collection from the loft and her 4 year old daughter loved playing with them. So when we had the chance to review the Red Roof Cosy Cottage Starter Home I jumped at the chance.
The cottage itself is charming and beautifully designed. It has a classic red roof, cream walls, and a warm, inviting look. The cottage has two levels, with a removable floor that doubles as a garden or patio area, which adds to the versatility of the toy and extra play opportunities. The ladder connecting the two floors is simple but effective, and my daughter quickly figured out how to move it around to.
The set includes one of the iconic Sylvanian rabbit characters. She is dressed in a sweet red polka-dot outfit. The set also comes with a selection of furniture: a bed with floral bedding, a table and chairs, a bench, and some kitchen accessories like a frying pan, and plate. All the elements seem to be well thought out and well made.
My daughter was excited to open the box and start playing with the cottage and the little rabbit. She made the rabbit dinner and put her to bed. She spent ages arranging the furniture and moving the little rabbit around the house. It was great to see how imaginative she could be and the little stories she could come up with. Due to the size of the pieces, the toy is also great for her fine motor skills.
It is great that these sets do not require batteries. It is a challenge to keep the children away from screens these days so having something like this that my daughter can play with of her own accord is brilliant. The cottage is also compatible with other Sylvanian Families sets, which means we can add to the collection which I know my daughter will love.
The quality of the cottage is excellent. The plastic is sturdy, the pieces are well designed, and nothing feels flimsy or breakable. The interior space is a bit limited once you start adding more furniture or figures, but this is another benefit of the other sets being compatible. The ladder was a little fiddly at the outset for daughter, but she did get the hang of it in the end. I do worry that some of the smaller pieces might be easy to misplace.
The Red Roof Cosy Cottage Starter Home is a wonderful introduction to the world of Sylvanian Families. It is affordable, beautifully made, and packed with play value. Whether you are starting a collection or looking for a thoughtful gift, this set is a winner. It has brought hours of joy to our household, and I can see it being a firm favourite for a while due to its versatility.
The RRP of the Sylvanian Families Red Roof Cosy Cottage Starter Home is £34.99 but it is currently on sale at Smyths Toys for £19.99. The sale price is excellent value for money for a set like this and a great price for a gift for a friend or family member. If you had to pay £35 I might not be as keen.
