CrepeAffaire Bristol Review

Reviewed by Siobhan Bridgwater

Off we went today for brunch at the CrepeAffaire, a relatively new addition in Bristol. Opened in July of last year, this small eat-in/takeaway unit, opposite the stunning Wills Building, is a small but brightly fronted cafe. With its large, yellow awning covering a few outdoor tables, it is hard to miss. Inside, on the ground floor, they have a large food counter alongside which are a few tables and a window bar. First impressions are very welcoming. The look is modern and fresh with great lighting features and a black, white and yellow theme throughout. Upstairs, there is a further, slightly larger, seating area to relax in with sofas and armchairs, again beautifully lit and arranged. A single, unisex toilet is also sited up here. Disabled access is limited due to space restrictions and the presence of a small step at the entrance.

I was accompanied by two 12 year olds who naturally wanted to go straight for the old favourite: banana and Nutella pancakes, but I managed to encourage them into the more adventurous world of savoury pancakes to start. Crepeaffaire have a breakfast and lunch selection which all seemed very appealing.

We kicked off with two options from the savoury crepe menu: ham & cheese and the Green Thai Chicken.

The crepes were freshly made to order in full view of the customer and served with pre-prepared fillings. They arrived at our table promptly after ordering, were a good size and very well presented but, surprisingly, the fillings were both lukewarm. They had a good taste and were flavoursome. On the owner’s recommendation, the Thai Chicken one was returned and came back piping hot which was SO much better.

There is a great range of drinks on offer to accompany the food. They have a wonderful grounded coffee and tea selection, freshly squeezed orange juice, milkshakes and a whole host of bottled drinks to choose from. The coffee was fantastic as were the two latest additions to the milkshake range, tried by the children: Oreo and cookie dough, both served with whipped cream. Along with a juice, all were very well received and we each had our own personal favourite.

And then, we turned our attention to the long-awaited desserts menu. My son wanted to try the interestingly named “I’ll Have What She Is Having” which was a large crepe filled with Nutella and fresh strawberries and served with cream on the side which would have been perfect if it had not arrived with the additional strawberry sauce on top which just pushed it over the edge on sweetness, even for the seriously sweet-toothed youngster.

The plainer Belgian Chocolate crepe, however turned out to be a much more popular choice. It was very simple – no cream, no ice cream, served just with a light powdering of icing sugar, and was very good indeed.

Lastly, we tried the Strawberry Delight Belgian waffle which was a lovely surprise – soft and hot, served with chopped strawberries, cream and a chocolate sauce. Delicious.

All in all, we enjoyed our trip and left very satisfied.
