The Blob, a cult classic, is a 1958 Sci-Fi horror about an alien creature that crashes to Earth and starts devouring the town people. This release on DVD and Blu-ray has had a new 4k digital restoration.

In a small sleepy town in Pennsylvania Steve Andrews (Steve McQueen) is on a date with his girlfriend Jane Martin (Aneta Corsaut) when they see what they think is a shooting star come crashing to Earth. They decide to go and see if they can find it but an old man beats them to it. When he pokes at the rock with a stick it breaks open and a jelly-like blob emerges and attaches itself to his hand. Steve and Jane find the old man after nearly running him over and take him to the local doctor.

The Blob eventually devours the old man, followed by the doctor’s nurse and finally Dr Hallen himself. Steve witnesses the doctor’s death and tries to warn people but nobody believes him and think it is just a teenage prank, especially as no one else has seen The Blob and there are no bodies to found. The Blob is slowly moving around the town devouring people and getting bigger with every feeding.

With no obvious way to kill the jellylike blob, will the town survive?

Overall, I loved The Blob and the Blu-ray restoration is excellent with a crisp, clear picture and sound and vibrant colours. While it is not a scary horror, for a 1958 film it has been created quite well.

The only downside is the acting isn’t the greatest and quite wooden at times but the story is good and holds interest, despite this I still think it’s a great film.

It was created as a B-movie and that’s what it remains despite its cult status but is definitely one for lovers of sci-fi and classic horror. And make sure you listen to the theme tune, it’s great!
