Stones In His Pocket at the King’s Theatre Edinburgh Review

2-6 April 2019

Written by Marie Jones, directed by Lindsay Posner and staring only Owen Sharpe and Stephen Cavanagh this two-man comedy tells the story of two newly acquainted film extras on set of a Hollywood star studded movie being shot in a small village in Ireland.

The story portrays these two “nobodies’” experience of the impact people’s backgrounds, attitudes, actions, and interaction with each other, can play on the lives of others. The title comes from a local boy who after being let down and humiliated commits suicide in the local lake by weighing himself down with stones in his pockets. So as comedies go perhaps not laugh out loud funny throughout, but it certainly did make you chuckle at points.

Stones In His Pocket is a very different production that what I have seen previously. With only two cast members playing the various roles interchangeable certainly kept my attention. Switching cleverly between the different characters allowed me to easily recognise them and follow the storyline. The talented duo told an interesting and moving story very differently with no support or props.

The King’s Theatre is a traditional small theatre with a very welcoming atmosphere and friendly helpful staff. It is located in the city centre so is easily accessible by public transport but is also surrounded by on street parking. It has a couple of small bars perfect for a pre-theatre or interval drinks. And has a huge variety of restaurants and bars for food and drink pre and post show.

I had a good night at the King’s Theatre watching these two talented men tell a, at times, funny but moving story about how a small village was impacted by the glitz and glamour of Hollywood.
