Excellent Packable Cap with Thoughtful Features
I received the Sun Tripper Cap in the Mineral colour as a review item and have enjoyed using it over the past few days. As someone with this hair who wanted a lightweight, practical cap for walking and travel, I found it met most of my expectations and offered several thoughtful features such as the UPF 50+ Certified Sun Rating.
The first thing I noticed was how good the sizing is. The cap fits comfortably straight out of the box and the adjustment system is simple to use, making it easy to achieve a secure fit without feeling too tight. Once adjusted, it stayed comfortably in place throughout the day and I was even able to pull it down slightly to cover the tops of my ears during the hottest part of the day.
I chose the Mineral colour, a slightly blue/teal shade, and I’m very happy with how it looks. It’s a versatile, understated shade that works well with a wide range of outdoor clothing and doesn’t stand out too much. The cap has a practical, technical appearance without looking overly sporty. Of note is the peak which is slightly shorter than a regular cap which I also really liked.
One of my favourite features is the clam shell folding design. This makes the cap incredibly easy to pack away when it’s not needed. I could fold it down and slip it into a small bag without it taking up much room, and it even fitted comfortably into my shorts pocket. For travelling, hiking, or days out where space is limited, this is a genuinely useful feature rather than a gimmick.
The ventilation system is another thoughtful touch. The vent in the top of the cap is incorporated into a hidden pocket at the crown, with a Velcro closure that can be opened to improve airflow. In practice, I didn’t find any need to close it, and the cap seemed to ventilate perfectly well with it left open. The pocket is an interesting feature, although I’m not entirely sure what I would want to store in a pocket on top of my head, so I suspect I will get more use out of it as a ventilation panel than as storage. The lightweight synthetic fabric feels durable and well suited to travel and outdoor use. That said, while the cap is ventilated, I did find that my head became a little sweaty when wearing it. However, this was during particularly hot weather and I was already feeling overheated, so I suspect the conditions played a significant role. Even so, the cap remained comfortable throughout and never felt excessively heavy or uncomfortable to wear.
The only feature I wasn’t completely convinced by was the sunglasses holder. It’s a clever idea in principle, but I found it a bit fiddly to use. Getting the arms of my sunglasses positioned correctly took more effort than I expected, especially when trying to do it quickly. I think the design could be improved with some additional stitching or a more structured guide that naturally directs the arms of the glasses into place. That would make the feature more intuitive and easier to use on the go.
Overall, this is a well-designed, practical cap that offers excellent packability, good comfort, and useful sun protection. The folding design and adjustable fit are standout features, while the sunglasses holder could benefit from some refinement. Despite a few minor criticisms, I’m very happy with the cap and would recommend it to anyone looking for a lightweight travel or adventure cap.
