I am delighted to review the Grubs Bromley Boot. As someone who spends a great deal of time walking a dog, I am always on the lookout for durable, stylish footwear that can withstand the wet, muddy conditions of everyday walks. Comfort and practicality matter, of course, but I also appreciate boots that look good and feel good, and the Bromley Boot immediately caught my attention.
Grubs are a long‑established family firm from the North West of England, with a heritage in quality footwear dating back to the 1700s. An interesting fact from their website is that they actually founded Reebok in 1960, and the current head of the company was part of the team that created the iconic fitness shoes still loved today. It’s always reassuring when a product comes from a company with such deep roots in craftsmanship and innovation.
Upon opening the box, my first impression was simply how sturdy the boots looked. They feel tough and robust, yet they also have a stylish, Chelsea‑style design that sets them apart from traditional walking boots or wellingtons. The pair I received came in a classy green shade, with a deep, well‑structured sole both underfoot and at the heel. They looked like something I would genuinely enjoy wearing, not just tolerate for practicality.
Inside the box was also a small care card with the simple guidance: “Brush, Wash, Oil.” As these boots retail at around £75.00, I will definitely be following their advice to maximise longevity and keep them performing at their best.
So, how do they perform? I ordered a size 5, and they are certainly a generous size 5, which leaves plenty of room for thick socks in winter. One of the first things that impressed me was how easily they slip on. There was no pushing, tugging or awkward manoeuvring to get my foot through the top; they simply slid on smoothly. That alone earned a big tick from me.
I wore them on a dog walk – admittedly a dry one, thanks to a prolonged spell of hot weather – but I wanted to test comfort above all else. Underfoot, they felt wonderfully cushioned. The padded insole provides one of the best levels of comfort I’ve experienced in new walking footwear for quite some time. They genuinely felt supportive and pleasant to walk in.
I also tested them on a steep grassy slope, and they felt secure and stable, with no slipping or sliding. I’m not always the most sturdy on uneven ground, but walking downhill in these boots, I felt confident and well‑supported.
Around the garden, while pruning and deadheading, they continued to perform well. They keep your feet warm – something I know will be a real benefit in winter – and they handled climbing over rocks and navigating steps and the uneven terrain of my garden with ease. You can definitely feel that you’re wearing a sturdy boot; they are on the heavier side, but that weight clearly contributes to their durability and stability.
To test the waterproof claims, and given the lack of rain, I turned the hosepipe onto them for a couple of minutes (no hosepipe ban where I live!). I soaked them from every angle – top, sides and bottom – and not a single drop seeped through. As with all boots of this type, I imagine that waterproofing may diminish over time if not cared for properly, which is yet another reason I’ll be following their care instructions.
I wore the boots with shorts, and they are stylish enough to carry off that look – perfect for summer festivals. I’m genuinely looking forward to autumn and winter when I can really put them through their paces in more challenging conditions.
Overall, I am very pleased with the look, feel and performance of the Grubs Bromley Boot. For the tests I’ve done, they have proven durable, comfortable and reliable. If you want to invest in stylish, hard‑wearing footwear that avoids the typical walking‑boot or Wellington‑boot aesthetic, then these boots are an excellent choice.
