Sleeping Beauty at Buxton Opera House Review

9-31 December 2017

Reviewed by Debbie Lowndes

We were provided with the opportunity, as a family, to review the Christmas pantomime at Buxton Opera House – Sleeping Beauty. All six of us attended, one 4-year-old boy, one 10-year-old girl, 16-year-old young lady, 17-year-old young man, one 49-year-old man plus a 44-year-old woman. We took to our seats within the stalls and the curtain lifted! On come the screams. The pantomime commenced. It has a modern spin which was relevant to the current era. Each character within the performance was unique in their own right.

In true pantomime style there were many cheesy jokes, water pistols scenes, amazing colourful costumes, fantastically songs and dancers. Audience participation remained throughout in the form of sign slings, quote shouting such as ‘he’s behind you!’, ‘boo’ to the baddies plus each time the character Billy took to the stage everyone waved and shouted, ‘Hello Billy’. There were scary and romantic scenes. Great use of props and fireworks for the fairy appearance. It was a captivating and amusing performance from start to finish. Wow what fun, a chance to forgot everything and have fun #makingfamily memories.

The pantomime ran smoothly throughout, and I did not spot any flat points what so ever. Well done to the whole cast, you kept the performance on track and fun! My personal favourite in relation to scenes was the one of Billy and nanny in bed ha ha ha. The laughter and jokes throughout catered for the wide range of ages present and I am certain that everyone within the room took the opportunity to laugh at time point. Hats must go off the everyone involved – true quality. The pantomime is truly entertaining and high amusing. Everyone needs family time and the opportunity to let their hair down and have fun. This pantomime is not to be missed. Take the family to see this before the opportunity has past. Go on have some fun.

Buxton Opera House is a great venue and retains its original architecture. It offers all refreshments needs for performance and has a couple of bars. The theatre is easily accessible, and parking is close by and reasonable. It is clean, and staff are accommodating and friendly.
