I was asked to review Beauty and the Beast showing at Royal Spa Centre in Leamington Spa today, Sunday 4th December. We visited as two adults and two children. It was absolutely fabulous.
The theatre was fairly easy to find and understandably very busy it being the first weekend of the run. The box office was busy as was the bar, the service was fabulous and I have to say brilliant value for money, with two children with us I was more than pleasantly surprised at the cost. The theatre is small but cosy and we had good seats overlooking the stage.
For me Dame Dolly Do It played by JP McCue stole the show. Not least for the fabulous selection of sparkly shoes. The show got off to a cracking start, and we quickly met all the main characters. Enchantress, Dame Dolly Do It, Willy Do It, Eugene, Pimple, Beauty’s Dad, Beauty and the Beast himself. The chorus dancers were spot on, in time, great singers and a lovely variety of costumes. Dame Dolly Do It has by far the best costumes of the cast.
The show stuck to the bones of the story, all the songs were upbeat and current, no Be our Guest though I’m afraid… that being my only moan. I couldn’t say enough good things about this show, I proper belly laughed… lots. In the last few years I’ve only been to the pantomime once, it was expensive and not very entertaining, I would actually love to watch this again! I loved Beauty’s gowns, loved Dame Dolly Do Its more. Loved Willy Do It… Pimple to. Your kids will love it. Lovely touch doing shout outs not seen that before and happy birthdays. Audience participation was fab, not humiliating highly entertaining. The 12 Days of Christmas had us giggling lots, watch out for the fifth day! As was the B.U.M. song. I couldn’t believe how quickly it all went, I would highly recommend this show. It’s super flipping fab and I wish the cast a fantastic Christmas run. Go see it!
