As someone who really enjoys cooking, I was looking forward to reviewing this item and I wasn’t disappointed.

The Thermapen ONE Thermometer arrived in a sleek black box, giving the air of a real quality item.

It came with the thermometer itself, a leaflet detailing operating instructions, a nice shiny “Guide to perfectly cooked food” and a Calibration Certificate which provides the user with complete assurance of the high accuracy of readings of temperatures of food and liquids.

The Thermapen ONE is a top quality device. When I unpacked the thermometer from its lovely packaging, it felt like it belonged in a professional kitchen. From the shape of the device, which fits nicely into your hand, to the ease in which the probe can be opened, which, in turn, immediately produced a reading of the air temperature in the room on the digital display panel – it all felt very sleek.

The Thermapen ONE thermometer is hand made in Britain, is waterproof, and offers a 1-second accurate reading when the probe is inserted into food or liquid. The Calibration Certificate provides the assurance that readings will be accurate to ±0.3 °C. The temperature setting can also be changed to Fahrenheit if required.

The thermometer comes with a 5 year guarantee and has a wide range of readings from -49.9 to 299 °C.

I was really excited to see the thermometer at work, so I went out and bought a chicken especially for the occasion!

Whilst said chicken was in the oven, I read the “Guide to perfectly cooked food” booklet.

The Guide gives a number of Handy Tips, which explain how to get the best from the Thermapen ONE, along with details of the guarantee.

It provides a list of what the Thermapen ONE does not do, which importantly includes that it doesn’t test for “doneness” of food, only the current temperature, which I think is a really important point.

It also tells you what the Thermapen ONE does do, including providing the temperature of a wide range of food groups, such as meat, poultry, fish, breads, drinks, confectionary and many more. There are some helpful hints on how to get the most of your Thermapen ONE over time, taking into consideration different factors such as speed and method of cooking, food safety and temperatures, caring for your Thermapen ONE and how to customise the device to your own requirements.

Really useful, at the back of the Guide, is a table of common types of food and the optimal temperature at which you could expect them to be cooked (guidelines only), and, also very useful, the different temperatures for meats, depending on how you like them cooked: rare, medium or well-done.

So, once my chicken was ready, according to my kitchen timer, I removed from the over and nervously inserted the thermometer probe into the thickest part of the chicken breast and the reading came out almost instantly at 87.5 degrees Celsius. The guide stated that 74 degrees should be a guide temperature for when chicken is likely cooked – and it was cooked all the way through. The temperature did fluctuate a little whilst held in place, but this is to be expected. The temperature in the chicken leg was less at about 83 degrees.

The probe slid in the chicken breast easily and was removed with similar ease, I cleaned the probe, slid it back into place, and the digital display turned itself off, so there is no battery wastage!

I also tried the Thermapen ONE in a cup of boiling water and it came out at 92 degrees. I imagine the 30 seconds taken for me to find the cup and pour the boiling water into it will account for the drop in temperature from the boiling point. I would say that is very impressive!

I do make jam from time to time so I am really looking forward to using the Thermapen ONE for that, and not having to faff about with putting saucers in the freezer for jam testing purposes in future!

Overall, I am delighted with this device, it is pure quality, so very easy to use, exceptionally accurate and will become one of my most well used kitchen gadgets! An ideal gift for the cook or baker in your life!

Now – where’s my Jam Pan?

Rating: 5/5
