Self Belief Blog Series – Colette Malcolm
Welcome back to the Self Belief Blog Series, where we dig deep into the personal journeys and experiences of individuals who have mastered the art of self-belief.
Through a range of insightful interviews and practical tips, this series aims to inspire and empower you and explore the transformative power of self-belief and learn from the stories of those who have overcome doubt to achieve greatness.
Q1. Building Belief: Foundations & Triggers
Can you share a specific instance from your entrepreneurial journey where self-doubt threatened to derail your progress? How did you identify the root cause of that self-doubt, and what steps did you take to build a stronger foundation of self-belief moving forward?
When I first started my business and I was concentrating on mindset coaching only, I wanted to put on a free self-love masterclass. But I kept on procrastinating, and I couldn’t figure out why, because I felt I knew my stuff and I didn’t have any confidence issues. So, I did a little inner work on myself, including an inner child meditation and what came up was a scenario from when I was in high school that I had supressed and was now holding me back. Seeing that enabled me to heal that part of me and then I was able to move forward more freely.
Q2. Inner Critic vs. Champion:
We all have that inner voice whispering negativity. How do you manage your inner critic when it comes to your business decisions and goals? Conversely, how do you cultivate and amplify your inner champion, the voice that pushes you forward and celebrates your achievements?
I like to investigate where that negative Nelly is coming from. Is it my belief, family, society etc? And then I like to challenge it with all the positive evidence and information needed to turn it around. I journal daily and when I do, I like to use my affirmations to boost me up and I also like review each day and celebrate the wins, big and small. I also make sure I have good people around me who I reach out to when needed. People who hold space for me and support me when needed.
Q3 Fake it ’til You Make It or Authentic Confidence?
There’s a fine line between projecting confidence and genuinely believing in yourself. How do you navigate this in your entrepreneurial journey? Do you find there are situations where “faking it” can be a stepping stone to authentic confidence?
I am not a huge fan of the whole fake it ‘til you make it thing, but I am a big believer in trusting in the universe, god, whatever you want to call it. Having faith this way, I believe gives me the confidence to know that everything will work out exactly as it is meant to.
4. Failure as Fuel:
Entrepreneurship is full of ups and downs as we know. How do you bounce back from setbacks and failures? What strategies do you use to reframe challenges as opportunities for growth, and how does that process strengthen your self-belief?
I definitely look at any failures now as a learning experience. I dissect what went on so that I can understand what I need to do differently next time. I ensure that I treat myself with kindness and compassion in order to not stay stuck in a cycle of self-loathing and doubt. And again going back to the trust comment. I do also believe things are meant to happen for a reason and in divine timing, so knowing that too, also helps to keep that self-belief there.
5. Sharing Your Light & Inspiring Others:
Self-belief is contagious! How do you use your own story and experiences to inspire and empower other female entrepreneurs to believe in themselves and their dreams? What advice would you give your younger self, who might be facing self-doubt at the beginning of her entrepreneurial journey?
I like to share stories from my past so that people can see there is light at the end of the tunnel. You can go through a tough time and go on to achieve great things. I would tell my younger self to trust herself more and to tap into her inner guidance and know that there may be a few hurdles, but it is all part of the process. And finally I would tell her that best thing to do when faced with challenges is to pick herself back up again and go again, as it is better to fail and try again rather than to do nothing and wonder what if!!
