I don’t often try different wines as I tend to stick with the same ones that I know I like (which also tend to be the £6 jobs from the local shop!), so when an opportunity came up to try Seachange eco wine I was very intrigued and jumped at the chance. Seachange wine is an amazing company that ethically sources eco wines, and by doing so they help to protect our oceans from plastic pollution and bring us great tasting wine! In fact, every one of their wines helps to fund ocean conservation projects across the globe, and they use minimal packaging to both reduce waste and environmental impact. They use lighter weight glass bottles, renewable plant based bottle closures, and their labels are made from paper from sustainable forests, made in part from grape waste!
I tend to like rose wine the most, so I picked the Provence rose, from the luxury seahorse label range. This wine is made by the award-winning boutique producer Château Pigoudet, and is described as fresh and zesty with hints of grapefruit, white peach and pineapple. I was lucky enough to be sent the amazing magnum sized bottle, which is 150cl. This size bottle would be amazing if you were hosting a party at Christmas, to keep all your friends and family topped up!
The wine was an attractive pale pink blush colour and opened very easily because the horrible plastic wrap you often find around corks was conspicuous by its absence! Seachange have removed this unnecessary plastic and moved to renewable plant-based closures for the bottles, which not only help save the oceans, they don’t leave nasty bits of cork in your wine! I wondered if it would be sweet, but it was nicely dry and very tasty, with hints of fruit. I enjoyed drinking this wine with my friend, chatting over a couple of glasses that we easily put away! The label featured a very cute hand drawn seahorse, designed especially for Seachange by their graphic designer (editor’s note – name removed). Each animal has plastic items cleverly hidden inside the image such as plastic bottles and cups and is done in order to illustrate the dangers of plastic pollution in our oceans.
Seachange also do several other ranges of wine, each one represented by an ocean animal such as the starfish prosecco, the otter Spanish wines, the dolphin chardonnay and negroamaro, the whale wines produced in Château Canet, the porpoise Italian wines, the sealion German range, and the turtle range which is exclusively sold in Star Pubs in the UK. Each bottle is beautifully illustrated, just like my seahorse wine.
By buying these wines you are taking a small step toward making a big impact on turning the tide on plastic pollution, so not only are you getting a tasty and carefully selected wine, you are helping save the planet at the same time! Seachange have already raised €100,000 to help fund vital research, and any purchase contributes toward doing the same. Any of these wines would be a gorgeous and unusual Christmas present, giving not only a gift of great wine but the gift of contributing to saving our oceans, and as I mentioned above they would also be great to use when hosting a Christmas party, particularly the magnum size. The website has a helpful guide to different wine varieties to help you choose, and you can either choose to purchase individual bottles of wine, mix and match bottles to get a discount, or buy a gift voucher for a loved one so they can make their own choice.
