On Friday 5th August, Epicurean Events’ usual Friday food market at St Katharine Docks was transformed into a Brazilian fiesta to celebrate the beginning of the Rio Olympics. With festive Brazilian bunting draped across the stalls and an amazing selection of food from all over the world taking part, from Greek falafel to Spanish Paella, Vietnamese salads and a Mexican grill, the market was truly buzzing.
With over 15 vendors to choose from, the selection was so varied that we decided to sample a couple of delicacies including delicious Greek souvlaki in a wrap with all the tasty trimmings and a mouth-watering taco from the Mexican Grill. We then decided to up our game and truly go in for the Brazilian experience – we were celebrating Rio 2016 after all – and with the sun shining, we made for the Brazilian stand, which also coincidentally had the longest queue in the market!
Sampa, the Brazilian BBQ, may have only had a few things on their menu however it did not disappoint. We opted for the Beef Superfood Salad – a delicious combination of grains, pulses, peppers, butternut squash and various other veg tossed in a lovely light citrus vinaigrette with strips of perfectly seared Brazilian BBQ style beef, this salad was absolutely amazing! We even got to wash it down with an authentic Guarana Antarctica juice drink AND we even managed to relax and enjoy our food with a seat in the sun overlooking the beautiful boats docked in the water – we were truly transported from central London to warmer climates!
I would highly recommend popping to the street market to enjoy a tasty lunch by the river, and as it’s on every Friday between 11am – 3pm, Rio Olympics or not, so there is no excuse not to visit — St Katharine Docks is located waterside, close to Tower Bridge and easily accessible by foot, bike or bus, and is under a 10 minute walk from Tower Hill underground.
