“Two brothers. One Destiny.”
We went along to The Royal & Derngate in Northampton last night (19 November) to watch the opening night of Rain Man, this being the last week of a tour of the UK. The Royal & Derngate is amongst my favourites in the area. Good road links from the motorway and surrounded by ample parking facilities.
We have all seen the film, right? Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman star in the much celebrated film which tells the story of Charlie and Raymond. A tale of discovery, of preconceived labels being broken, of brotherly love renewed later in life.
The set is stark and not elaborate in the least, to be fair the director lets the actors do the talking. The main four characters are all admirable and believable. Ed Speleers was superb as Charlie, his star quality only somewhat slightly pipped by Mathew Horne as Raymond.
Act one was absorbing as you followed the newly found relationship of Charlie and Raymond. Act Two blew me away. The emotion on stage was incredible and you couldn’t but help place yourself in their shoes, I have a brother, he never taught me to dance, but I do hold him tight to my heart.
When the show came to an end, I’m sure Charlie had a real tear in his eye, such was the emotion on stage. Essentially a two man show, these two lads were awesome, the portrayal of the relationship felt so real. Outstanding acting, a show you really wouldn’t regret seeing. Mathew Horne wow, loved your performance, completely believable, all consuming, touching. I would dance with you anytime.
Last few days to catch the show, get your ticket, you will without doubt not be disappointed.
Tickets cost from £14 (booking fees may apply).
