Christmas is only a matter of weeks away.  The children are getting excited already and I am trying to get organised with gift buying as we have a large extended family with lots of children and teens.  I always find a board game makes a perfect present.  Whatever your age, young or old, you can enjoy a board or card game, especially as a family.

Qwaffle is a word based card game from John Adams.  This is a brand I know and trust, having purchased many toys and games from them for my children over the years.  The game is recommended for 8+ years and is for 2 or more players.

Firstly, I have to begin by mentioning the absolutely amazing packaging this game is in.  I have never seen such a unique and unusual case for a card game.  Once out of the cardboard the game is in a small, round case shaped and designed to look like a waffle with a zip to open and close.

Inside the case is 50 square shaped playing cards, a pad of 50 score sheets, a sand timer and the instruction leaflet.  Our family love a card game and we were all eager to have a play of this one due to the unusual box and name.  We also get very competitive when it comes to word games.  Qwaffle is a very simple game, we only needed a quick read through the instructions.  There is hardly any setting up needed and the rules are easy to follow and learn.

The basic premise of the game is to name words based on a given letter and category.  One side of the cards has a letter and the other a category such as ‘food you find in a fridge’.  Each player needs to think of a suitable word and write it on their score sheet.  The sheet has boxes for different length words.  You need to decide which one you will use.  This gets harder as the game goes on.  For the last round you will only have one box remaining, this could be tricky if you are left needing an 8 letter word for the final category.  Once a player has written a word in the sand timer is started, all other players must write in their own word before time is up!

At the end of the game a score is added up based on how many letters your words had.  But if another player wrote the same word as you neither of you score any points for that category.  For this reason, we found that the game works better with more players.  We had a few two player games and often ended up with the same score at the end.

Qwaffle is a really fun game.  It is the sort of game anyone can have a try at and would work well with a big group of people, even of different ages.  I’ve seen and played lots of similar word games but this one really stands out for its unique box design.  For this reason it will make a fantastic Christmas present for older children and teenagers.  The box is so quirky, it’s sure to delight.

Priced at £12.99, Qwaffle is an affordable gift this Christmas and I think it’s fantastic value for money with how high quality the game is. It looks and feels well made. A lovely way to get all the family playing together.
