Private Lives is a production of Noel Coward’s multi-award winning comedy which focuses on a divorced couple who, while on honeymoon with their new partners, discover that they are staying in the next room of the same hotel. After initial arguments they realise they still love each other and run away to Paris where they embark on a turbulent love affair.
Strictly Come Dancing fans are in for a treat as Tom Chambers plays the frivolous, charming and very funny Elyot brilliantly. He is joined by the equally radiant Laura Rogers who plays his vibrant and utterly mad ex wife, Amanda just perfectly. Both of which are very well supported by Charlotte Ritchie and Richard Teverson who make up the wonderfully dysfunctional four-some. This is a real classic slap stick comedy with some laugh out loud one liners and outrageous behaviour.
The costumes and stage had a very art deco feel about them which was very fitting for the 1930 era and dialog of this comedy. There were two stage designs both of which worked very well in setting the scene of the story.
The Theatre Royal is a modern theatre which provides good space to mingle with a choice of bars and toilet facilities on each of the floors, and staff that are helpful and friendly. The theatre itself is beautiful and feels intimate and cosy. Our seats in the dress circle were quick and easy to access and provided a good view of the stage. The theatre is located in the city centre which means it is easily accessible by public transport and has on street parking close by.
I had a fun light-hearted night and would recommend the show to friends. Overall I would give the production three stars out of five.
