Myself and my sister went to see the Mandela Trilogy, a musical tribute to the life of Nelson Mandela, at the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton on Wednesday 8th September. As always the service we received upon arrival of the theatre was perfect. The information desk politely directed us to collect our tickets, the signs were clear as to which door to go into and there were also ushers there to guide us to our seating area. The facilities were clean and parking was local. Our seats were in the circle which in my opinion gives the best view upon the stage.
The show began as an opera (with subtitles) and if I’m honest my heart sunk! I am not a fan of opera. However, some of the characters were less operatic and the show began to take a turn with a more upbeat musical theme, which I was pleased with. With the show not being 100% opera meant it turned out that I thoroughly enjoyed the production, which is told in 3 parts covering Mandela’s life from freedom fighter, his 27 years in prison and his freedom which led to him becoming President of South Africa.
With a cast of over 60 South African performers, there were 3 actors playing Mandela at different stages during his life which was helpful to show the various times the events happened. All of which were believable. All actors in the show lured you into their experiences and emotions they were feeling. I knew a little of the story of Mandela but came away feeling that I now knew it a little better.
The music was provided by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra.
A thoroughly enjoyable and inspirational show which I would definitely recommend.
