I was really pleased to be asked to review Magic – It’s a Kind of Queen at the Grove Theatre, and decided to take my mum along as we both love the hits of Queen. The Grove Theatre in Dunstable is a modern, clean theatre and the parking is really convenient (less than a 5 minute walk away), and after 6pm it is completely free. As always the staff were friendly and helpful.

I have seen a couple of Queen tribute bands so kind of knew what to expect. I know that ‘Magic’ do not try and emulate Queen visually, and when they came out on Stage they reiterated this. They wanted to celebrate the music of Queen. This was quite a relief, as I have to say the lead singer looks nothing like Freddie Mercury and band look nothing at all like Queen.

I have to firstly say that the musicians blew me away, all of them were brilliant. The sound quality was just fantastic and all 3 guitar players were out of this world. As I love the music of Queen my feet were tappiong and my hands clapping straightaway.

The lead singer what he may lack in ‘Freddieness’ he makes up for in enthusiasm. The only thing I would say is occassionly the music droqwned his vocals out a bit because it was so powerful. My personal favourite tracks for his vocals were ‘The show must go on’ and ‘These were the days of our lives’.

In the interval I and my mum did comment that we would have been a little upset if we had paid for the tickets as it was not quite what we were expecting. We didn’t think that the vocals were powerful enough and it felt a bit ‘karaoke’

However in the 2nd half we totally changed our mind. The music was fantastic and vocals brilliant. Bohemian Rhapsody was almost as good as the original and received a standing ovation (which was well deserved). Another favourite of mine I want to break free.

The guys came back on for an encore and did a version of ‘Mr Blue Skies’ (they also do a tribute for ELO as well). What can I say it was truly amazing and the lead singer nailed it.

I had a brilliant night and so did my Mum. I would not recommend this for people who are looking for a visual experience of Queen, but if like me you just love their music and want to hear it played live this is the show for you! The band show they love what they do and you just get carried away with their obvious enthusiasm.

Well done Magic… Loved it.
