It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas – especially at the Heights of Abraham in Matlock. Transformed into the magical Lights of Abraham, this setting has been wonderfully turned into a quaint picturesque village one would imagine finding at the North Pole! And, for the added speciality of our visit last night, we were surprised by LOTS of snow. From the car park, we had a short walk up to the cable cars and even though the ride was only a few minutes long, the view was beyond spectacular. At the top of the hill, we were met by the lovely staff who welcomed us and directed us to the route and the café, restaurant and toilets. We decided to treat ourselves to some much-needed hot chocolate to warm us through. Both the café and restaurant were open and serving drinks and hot food and by the time we sat down with our drinks, it was getting very busy with many people ordering hot drinks and jacket potatoes. The restaurant was serving various hot meals and I spotted some people having pizzas.

We then started our stroll around the setting, taking some lovely Christmassy pictures and enjoying the lights and scenes around the path – even enjoying a little snowball fight between the five of us. We have visited this venue before but during the day and the evening in lights and snow is such a different experience. We walked up to the lookout point where you could see the town in the distance. We walked through the fairy garden and visited the “Christmas through the ages” exhibition which my daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed. The display shared the history of how and when some of the Christmas traditions that we all still follow to this day started and you could see the different scenes of how Christmas changed through the years.

There is a gift shop open next to the café which also sold some lovely Christmas gifts and another little shop higher up on the hill that sold some lovely pieces of jewellery other little treasures that would make lovely seasonal gifts. It also displayed some lovely fossils that captured my attention very quickly – from velociraptor teeth to an odd-looking fish!

When we completed our visit, the wait for the return cable car wasn’t long and we could quickly make our way back to our car in the car park. The visits are staggered so no long queues for any of the areas or the entrance. Tickets can be purchased from www.heightsofabraham.com/winter-lights-trail-2024 and prices start from £15. Tickets to this event would make lovely Christmas gifts but you have to act quickly, the event started on the 22nd November and will run through to the 30th December but will sell out fast. This event is suitable for the family but please note that some areas are steep and may have a small incline – make sure your party are all aware.

I rate this outing as 4/5. Even though we were fortunate to experience natural snowfall, chances are there won’t be much left from today! Planning a meal and a spot of shopping, together with a stroll through the light path, this would make a lovely event for any family.

Rating: 4/5
