CBeebie’s Numberblocks is an award winning tv show which aims to make maths fun for early learners. The educational show uses visual techniques that are aligned with the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) framework. Based on the success of the show, the franchise have released an app, books and a great range of games.

Luckily, my 4 year old enjoys maths. I want to encourage that enjoyment whilst also being able to nurture his aptitude and I have always been a firm believer that children learn more when they are having fun – and the Numberblocks Memory Match Game from www.learningresources.co.uk was a LOT of fun.

The game encourages and develops multiple skills including counting, verbalising number names, subitising (recognising amounts on sight) and matching skills. It is great at building confidence and encouraging problem solving.

The Numberblocks Memory Match Game is a modern twist on the classic memory game “pairs” – the aim is to turn over the cards to help the Numberblock characters find their match. There are multiple ways to play so you can keep reaching for the game over and over again without it feeling repetitive.

The game consists of 80 high quality printed cards (40 matching pairs, based on numbers 1-10 ) which have colourful visuals of the well-known characters including Numberblocks, Numberblobs, Number Fun and Numberlings. The cards are colour coded to allow for a quick and easy game set up, they are of a high quality and are a great size for small hands. They come packaged in a sturdy, nice sized box, making it great for taking with you on your travels. Instructions are clear and simple to follow which is always a bonus when you have an excited child who is waiting to get stuck in!

One of the things that I liked most about this game, is the way in which it can be adapted to your child’s ability level. 80 cards is a lot for younger children (this game is aimed at age 3 and above) so you have the option to start with fewer cards and keep increasing the quantity as their knowledge and confidence grows. I can see that this game would remain firm favourite well into their Primary School years – playing “pairs” is always a hit with kids in our family, so it will still be fun even after they have mastered numerals and counting. To prove the point, myself and my husband got very competitive at one stage in the game and we are well into our 30’s and our learning days are well behind us!

The addition of a QR code on the box is a nice touch. When scanned, it takes you to the Learning Resources website which shows you different ways to play, other games available in the Numberblock range as well as giving you access to downloadable workbooks and activity sheets.
