Although it may not be immediately apparent by looking out of the window, it is officially Spring! The days are getting longer and lighter and, if like me, it inspires you to start Spring cleaning there are some great products out there to make your life easier.
We are all tight for time these days, so even a quick win like making your toilet fresh, clean, and smelling nice is a great way to start. There are lots of different types of wc cleaner on the shelves, from liquid in squeezy bottles to rim blocks, so I was pleased to give two different types a try.
The first was a pretty pink shaped gel, that my son dubbed the caterpillar! From the well known brand Bloo, the Brilliant gel All- in- 1 cleaner comes in several different fragrance/colour options, such as the blue Artic Ocean or the pink Spring Rain that I trialled. Its easy to use, you just pull the foil backing from the gel and hang on the rim of the toilet close to the strongest water flow. Just a one minute job gives you a bright shiny clean toilet pan, dirt protection, which helps dirt sticking and a fresh perfume, all for an rrp of £1.49.
The second was the new limescale prevention Bloo toilet blocks. These need a removable cistern lid, so are only suitable for a traditional style toilet not a built in one with no access to the cistern. Again, these are really easy to use, and are great value, with two in a pack each lasting up to 800 flushes. All you need to do is pop one block in your cistern, by lifting the lid, and flush. The water turns blue to show its intense cleaning foam is working and it provides a natural pine fragrance.

If you have some laundry that’s been waiting for a nice drying day, then Dylon Colour Catcher sheets should be a staple in your cupboard. Saving time, money & water by allowing mixed washes, the 100% natural fibre sheets, which look a lot like paper, just need placing in the drum before adding your laundry or detergent. Coming in packs of 24, the sheets trap colours that bleed into the water during the wash, so you can safely wash all colours together. They also prevent greying on whites by stopping loose particles accumulating. Safe for use with machine, hand wash or a washer dryer the colour catcher sheets stop that sinking feeling when your white top comes out pink!
Maybe though, you do have something you want pink, or Sunflower yellow, or Forest Green. Try one of Dylon’s massive colour range of All-in-one fabric dye ‘s which come in 100% recyclable pods. The 350g pods dye up to 600g dry weight of fabric directly in your normal front load washing machine. Its easy, if a little time consuming as the items need an initial wash, then a wash with the dye pod added, then a further wash with detergent. The empty machine then needs another wash through to rinse it with just detergent added. At the end of the four cycles, you could have a brightly coloured upcycled shirt, bed sheet or tablecloth, without buying new.
While your washing is drying, or your dye is setting how about sprucing up your patio with Jeyes 4in1 outdoor cleaner. The cleaner restores natural colour on a plethora of outdoor surfaces such as decking, patios, paths, driveways and fencing whilst killing 99.9% of germs. A little goes a long way as the cleaner can be diluted anywhere between 4 and 9 parts to one part of water, depending on how dirty the area is. My front paths have become incredibly slippery over the winter, and the Jeyes Cleaner has been a godsend. Either manually or with a pressure washer if you have one, it removes algae, mould, mildew and dirt so it loses its slippery covering and looks like new. You don’t have to get down on your knees and scrub either, you can put a pre wash down and use a broom if you don’t have a washer. It’s a really satisfying job too, where you can see the results as you clean.
From a one minute to one hour, whatever time you have in your day for Spring cleaning you can achieve anything from a shiny toilet to a sparkling patio using one of the great products above.
