Keen Newport H2 Sandals Review

IReviewed by Cath Joyce

I am a keen walker and cover hundreds of miles each year, both in our local area and further afield. I have been eyeing up some decent walking sandals for our summer holiday this year so the offer of a pair of KEEN Newport H2 sandals to review really couldn’t have come at a better time.

Walking sandals are a great addition to my summer walking kit, they are lighter than a pair of boots and much cooler to wear. No matter how breathable your boots are, in hot weather your feet can get very hot and sweaty and on long walks the sweat and friction can cause blisters which can be incredibly painful. With sandals your feet can breathe more and benefit from any breeze helping to keep feet more comfortable. Sandals also dry a lot faster than boots so if you walk through wet grass or even a stream your feet and sandals will dry quickly.

So now I’ve talked about the benefits of walking sandals let’s talk about the NEWPORT H2 sandals themselves. KEEN’s legendary Newport sandal celebrates it’s 20th birthday this year and they are still a number one best seller across the globe. To celebrate the anniversary, they have launched a selection of limited edition colours to join the existing favourite colours and designs. With 20 different colours available I really was spoilt for choice! After much deliberating I plumped for one of the new colours, the Fjord Blue/Tie Dye which is a lovely shade of blue and looks nice and summery so perfect for the nice weather we are currently having.

The women’s sandals are available in sizes 2.5 to 8.5 and it’s great how they do half sizes too, as a perfect fit is so important when you are hiking to help prevent blisters. The top of the sandal is made from a washable polyester webbing which has a lace-lock bungee fastening system which allows you to tighten/loosen the sandal easily. It feels nice and secure on the foot and there is no fear of it unfastening whilst walking. The sandal has an EVA insole with arch support which cradles the foot nicely and a non marking rubber sole with plenty of grip. The sandals also have a rubber toe cap to protect your toes meaning they are great for water sports too.

As walking sandals are frequently used for water activities they need to be made from quick-drying materials and have soles that still grip when wet. We’ve just spent the bank holiday weekend on a canal boat which provided the perfect test for these sandals and I have been wearing them for walking, walking around the boat and also a spot of canoeing.

So how did they perform – well they are absolutely perfect and so comfortable to wear. They fit incredibly well, the bungee fastening system works perfectly and keeps the sandal nice and secure on my feet. The moulded EVA insole is firm and provided all-day comfort so whether I was walking or canoeing and had wet or dry feet my feet were comfortable. The sandals have a good grip on the sole and I didn’t slip when going down steep downhills or when the soles were wet. When walking on the tow path and across fields they kept my feet nice and cool despite the heat and best of all I didn’t get any blisters – the ultimate sign of good footwear!

Another advantage to the sandals is they are much lighter than boots weighing only 322g so are perfect for putting in your suitcase for holidays.

I am really impressed with these sandals, they are comfortable, supportive and look good too. Whether you are a keen walker or someone who just wants a nice sturdy pair of sandals to walk the dog in summer these sandals are perfect for both rugged terrain and country walks and I can highly recommend them

The sandals are available from the KEEN website here.
