Kanpai Classic-Wagyu Cuisine. A World Class Culinary Journey in the Heart of Soho, London.
We had the absolute pleasure of dining at Kanpai Classic on Wardour Street. We experienced their Wagyu-focused menu, and it was easily one of the most refined, elegant, and unforgettable menus we’ve ever had, and our first experience with Wagyu.
From the first course to the last bite of dessert and all the bits in between, this was a thoughtfully curated journey through texture, technique, and premium ingredients, with A5 grade “Himawari” Japanese Wagyu as the centrepiece.
We began with the Wagyu Steak Tartare, elegantly plated with caviar to add a touch of saltiness to the delicate meat.
Next came the Wagyu Temaki of the Day, hand-rolled at the table by ourselves with crispy nori, warm sushi rice, and tender wagyu slices.
The Wagyu Yakiniku Feast began with melt-in-your-mouth Wagyu Beef Tongue, grilled tableside to a smoky finish. We had never eaten beef tongue before and were looking forward to trying this cut of meat, which is a Japanese delicacy.
Then came the show-stopping Wagyu Sugatayaki, presented whole and sliced to reveal juicy marbling, served atop fluffy Nanatsuboshi rice from Hokkaido — nutty, aromatic, and steamed to perfection.
The Wagyu Moriawase (grilled wagyu platter) featured:
* Negiyaki – thin-sliced beef grilled with spring onion, sweet and savoury.
* Karubi – short rib cuts, rich and juicy. This was one of my favourite cuts of Wagyu; it was very flavoursome without overpowering the delicately lean meat.
* Rib Finger – intensely flavourful with a satisfying chew.
Each cut was grilled precisely to enhance its texture and natural flavour, accompanied by dipping sauces and sea salt to personalise every bite.
From the steak options, we had the Sirloin and Knuckle, served medium-rare on the advice of our waitress. The marbling on this Wagyu was sensational, tender, juicy, and bursting with buttery richness.
The Kamameshi rice of the day, cooked and served in a traditional iron pot, was fragrant and comforting, the kind of soul-satisfying dish that gently closes the savoury portion of the meal. Ours included chicken and a light broth, a quiet reminder of how even simple dishes can shine when treated with care. I was wondering if I would enjoy this dish, as I’m not a big fan of broth, but it turned out to be one of my favourite dishes and a perfect savoury ending to a very meaty meal.
Dessert was the Chef’s Special of the Day: a cheesecake and chocolate fondant accompanied by a berry compote and cream but light and refreshing after a rich series of courses.
From the very first bite of the Wagyu, it was clear we were in for something special. Every course was a work of art, expertly prepared, with many grilled in front of us on the BBQ built into the table, beautifully presented, and bursting with flavour. The progression of dishes was perfectly paced and balanced, showcasing the chef’s skill and creativity. The highlights? Honestly, there are too many to choose from, but the Wagyu Steak Tartare, Karubi, Wagyu Gyoza and Sirloin were truly next level.
What made the evening even more special was the staff’s care and attention to detail. They explained each dish with genuine passion and were happy to answer our many questions, making us feel fully immersed in the experience.
We enjoyed our meal, accompanied by cocktails and sake. Our waitress expertly recommended drinks to each of us based on our individual preferences, which also complemented the food. We highly recommend the Yuzu Jasmine Daquiri, Early Grey Negroni, Wagyu Carre and the Blossom.
The setting is intimate and elegant, with a calm ambience; soft lighting and a hushed, respectful tone that makes the experience feel truly special. The food takes centre stage. It’s clear that everything here, from ingredients to service, is handled with respect and precision.
If you’re looking for an authentic taste of refined Japanese cuisine in London, Kanpai Classic is a must. It is worth every penny. It’s not just a meal; it’s a story told through flavour, craftsmanship, and luxury.
Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply treating yourself, this is an experience you won’t forget, leaving you feeling indulged.
We left full, inspired, and looking forward to our next Wagyu experience.
There are a range of dishes and drinks available to suit all tastes and budgets, including Kanpai Classic’s Omakase Menu, which offers a delicious selection of dishes for £98 per person, as well as a lunch menu and à la carte options.
