We arrived at Tunbridge Wells Assembly Hall last night full of anticipation to hear one of the great comedians of my childhood, the now 61 year old Jim Davidson.
The first half of the show was carried out by a warm up comedian, Lloyd Hollett, someone that neither me or my husband had heard of, and so were apprehensive. We were not disappointed with Lloyd one bit, in fact we spent 45 minutes laughing out loud. As normal with a warm up, the audience was a little subdued holding back for the main act, but that definitely does not mean he was not a fantastic comedian in his own right and well worth a watch if you see him billed somewhere near you.
After the interval Jim Davidson came on in a jumper and tweed jacket started his act to find that only half the stage was illuminated, on asking for the edge of the stage to be lit the entire stage was awash with thousands of watts of lighting, causing Jim to remove his jacket through the heat and complain about the lights. There began the evenings show. The lighting and recent refurbishment of the theatre were a common theme throughout the act but the basis of the night was where he grew up, Kidbrooke, the rough end of Blackheath. This interspersed with current politics, the state of his sex life and the Falkland Islands made for an eclectic evening’s entertainment. At the end of the show Jim mentioned his charity, Care after Combat, working with war veterans struggling to integrate back into society. This is an incredibly worthwhile charity which not only supports the veterans but their families as well.
We saw the show at the newly refurbished Tunbridge Wells Assembly Hall which is the perfect sized venue for the performance, intimate yet atmospheric. The staff are prompt and courteous, the venue clean and tidy and has easy access for those with disabilities. It is an easy place to park too with a multi storey car park next door with charges of only £1.00 per night.
Jim Davidson’s sense of humour may be controversial in parts but we had a great evening and hardly stopped laughing. A really fun night out full of good old fashioned style humour brought up to date with current news topics, highly recommended.
