Now, here’s what lovely Nicola Cunningham of True Food Nutrition had to say…

How and when did your business start?

My business started in September 2022 after a three-year diploma course in Naturopathic Nutrition. For the almost 30 years before that I taught in schools across the age range 5 – 18, from a classroom teacher, to safeguarding lead and senior management.  I loved my career but decided I had something else in me, took the plunge and retrained as a nutritional therapist.

What advice would you give anyone who finds the festive period a challenge?

Nutritionally, many find Christmas a challenge.  There is so much food around and so many opportunities to eat it! So many tempting snacks and meals and sweets that aren’t normally in the cupboard and so many times when people say ‘oh go on, its Christmas.  Worry about it in January!’.  What many find hard though is the emotional element of all that food kicking about and all that food consumed. It probably works like this for many………scoff two mince pies and a big handful of celebrations (or two) and spend the rest of the day giving yourself a hard time about that.   My advice is to eat, enjoy and miss out the self-flagellation.  But’ also to remember that you don’t have to eat like that EVERY day in December, that you can, on many days, just eat like you normally eat!

What have been your biggest business challenges?

My biggest business challenge is really persuading people of the idea that investing time and money in their health is exactly the same as investing in their financial pension.  Without it, life is so much more of a challenge.  So many people will pay for a quick fix like face fillers or supplements without too much thought or will just battle on feeling rubbish, thinking that’s their lot.  So many people will look after the health of their pets before themselves and convincing people otherwise is hard work.  And when they do invest in themselves and commit to a package of nutritional support, they find it’s not as hard as they expected, they don’t have to just eat kale and, for many, it utterly revolutionises their lives!

What would you say is the best thing about being in Maddy Alexander-Grout’s Invisible To Influential membership?

I am really new to the membership so have yet to really grasp it’s potential but from my exposure so far to Maddy’s membership, the different perspective and straightforward approach is something is beyond what is usually on offer.

Are there any recent wins that you would like to tell us about?

Delivering a workshop to 140 blokes in a Northern mill town factory to persuade them to eat more veg!  They were game to try the tasters, took away the recipes and gave me great feedback about my delivery style and information.  It gave me a great boost of confidence at a time when I was feeling just a bit wobbly about how this business might work out for me.

What do you enjoy doing in your leisure time?

In my leisure time, I love to go to the gym and lift heavy sh*t – that’s really important for a woman of my age to look after my muscles, bones and blood sugar balance.  I love being outside, I love gardening and the odd glass of Prosecco or two with my mates!
