Now, here’s what lovely Charlotte Dover ADHD Coach And Mentor And founder Of The (Maybe) ADHD Community And The Dopamine Delivery had to say…
How and when did you start your business?
I started my coaching business 6 years ago, but it didn’t go well for years! In January 2022, two years after my ADHD diagnosis, I finally pivoted into supporting other late diagnosed ADHD women through coaching and mentoring. So in many ways, my business started “by accident” or as natural progression, always knowing that I wanted to help people, and it becoming an ADHD support business over time.
What would you say have been your biggest business challenges?
Definitely learning how to work WITH my brain, even if this means doing things differently from how others have. Navigating business with ADHD makes for additional challenges, especially with emotional regulation when it feels as though clients aren’t saying yes, or things aren’t happening quickly enough. Alongside challenges with staying on top of figures, plans and focuses which can make it a fun ride. That said, my lack of focus has led to some pretty exciting side quests! Keeping the belief that it will all work out in the end was challenging, but also true!
What do you like best about being in Maddy Alexander Grout’s Invisible To Influential membership?
The community that Maddy has built, which is welcoming, supportive and collaborative, it’s a great place to be!
What advice would you give to anyone thinking about starting their own business?
If you’re putting it off because you’re not sure exactly what you want to do or how you’ll feel about it, start anywhere and experience how it feels. We spend so much time trying to guess how things will feel, and our brains are terrible at accurately predicting this! So take a step, feel it out, and go from there. You’ll figure it out much more quickly that way!
Are there any recent wins that you would like to tell us about?
YES! Launching my subscription box in October. It’s something which had been on my mind for a couple of years and I FINALLY got out into the world. It’s the first (I’ve done a lot of research!) subscription exclusively created for ADHD women and I’m super proud of it – I managed to make it happen using my advice above!
I was also recently awarded a grant from UnLtd to allow me to finally make the exciting thing in my next answer become a reality…!
Do you have anything exciting coming up business wise?
It’s sort of secret, but needs to come out at some point! I’ve been working hard behind the scenes creating “The ADHD Empowerment Space” a place created to make the unregulated Coaching, and ADHD Coaching world a safer, more ethical place. It’s been created due to the rapid expansion in the ADHD coaching industry in the past couple of years, with many people calling themselves coaches when they have no coaching training, let alone ADHD coach training. When we’re supporting potentially vulnerable people, we have a duty of care to focus on our own professional development as part of that support, and this is something at the heart of “The ADHD Empowerment Space” where we have highly qualified and experienced coaches to match clients with, taking the stress out of finding the right support for yourself.
Which activities do you enjoy doing in your leisure time?
I enjoy many different things dependent on my mood but always high on the list are getting lost in a good book, creating – especially yarn craft and calligraphy, walking with my husband and pup and going out for a GREAT meal.
