As a mum of 3 my picnics are very much rucksack based with plain sandwiches and whatever I have in the house, so I do feel that I am very deserving of a posh grown-up picnic hamper. This was definitely not something that I would be sharing with the kids!
It arrived within a cardboard box with a cute gift note, but didn’t need any extra packing as the hamper itself is solid. It is actually a lovely size (around 36cm by 25 cm, with an approximate height of 13cm) and not too cumbersome to carry due to the strong leather handle. I especially love the dual buckle fastening as it feels more secure and less likely to pop open whilst carrying it. This is something that I will use again with my husband or the kids when we are feeling a bit posh!
Inside, the finer details really make this a gorgeous product; the same style of beige buckles which fasten the hamper are used to hold two porcelain plates in place, and the cutlery is secured with matching leather straps. Enclosed are two metal knives, forks and spoons, plus a bottle opener, each with a white plastic handle. I would have expected cream cutlery to match the plates and lining of the hamper, but it is still lovely to have “proper” cutlery and plates instead of plastic, adding to the luxurious feel.
I was surprised that prosecco glasses were not included in the hamper. I do appreciate that glass is breakable but even some plastic flutes would have been a handy addition, as the hamper is otherwise “ready to go” with the handy bottle opener. I did look at the website and there didn’t appear to be the option of any add-ons such as glasses or a picnic blanket.
I was worried that the hamper would need to be opened right away to pop the cheese into the fridge, but it had been placed onto a little cooling Hydropac inside the hamper to keep it fresh and cool. This can be used again for the cheese when you have your picnic, which is a lovely touch.
My husband and I decided to skip dinner one evening and have a little Summer picnic in the garden once the kids were in bed, which was a lovely treat for us. The contents of this hamper is pure luxury and did not disappoint. The bottle of La Tenuta Sconta Prosecco was simply divine, and didn’t last very long! We enjoyed the smoked cheese on the sourdough crackers; the cheese was tasty and creamy and complemented the crunch of the crackers perfectly. The portion of cheese was so generous that we had leftovers for the next day.
I’m not a lover of pickled onions and always prefer a chutney, however my husband was in heaven as they had a real kick being pickled in cider vinegar with chilli. His breath afterwards perhaps didn’t compliment the romantic mood sadly, but I think the food was so good that he wasn’t too bothered! The black truffle crisps were rich, delicious and proper grown-up crisps, and the Roquefort crackers tasted perfect alongside the prosecco. Following on from the savoury, the lemon melts were the perfect compliment; white chocolate, lemon and crunchy biscuit. An inspired blend of tang and sweetness, and incredibly moreish.
Finally the fudge (oh the fudge!) Sea salted caramel is seriously my favourite. Three pieces did feel like an odd number for a couples-hamper… that said, I ate all three myself as it was so delicious.
On first glance I had assumed that this was more of a snack hamper, but once the packets were open and onto the plates there was so much food to eat. It did feel like a light meal, with plenty left-over for the next day. This was a perfectly constructed hamper, with immaculate packaging and presentation.
This hamper would make a perfect romantic gift for a birthday, wedding, engagement, anniversary or even a “new home” gift. Browsing the website it is worth noting that there are many other options of hampers to suit most occasions and a variety of budgets, although I have to say that this one was a great choice. The website even offers suggestions of choice picnic locations, and allows you to browse by recipient, contents or occasion which makes choosing a little easier.
I feel that the hamper is priced fairly at £99 due to the quality of the contents and luxurious details (who likes a plastic plate when you can have a porcelain one?!) I would award this hamper 4.5 stars out of 5, it would have been full marks if there had been some glasses to drink from which is a minor point. Otherwise this is the perfect Romantic Hamper.
