Girls Like Us by Charlotte Ashby Review

Reviewed by Laura Fairbairn

‘Girls Like Us’ is written by Charlotte Ashby and published by Twisted Country.

The story centres on the adventures of 29 year old Emily Brighouse. She works for a big PR firm in the centre of London and lives with her best friend Bella in a small apartment in Fulham. The girls, who have been friends for many years have an ‘interesting’ lifestyle which most people would expect them to have grown out of quite a few years ago – nightly heavy drinking, parties, late rent payments, and the less said about ‘the map of shame’ the better (I’ll leave the explanation of that one for you to discover when you read the book yourself!).

Emily begins to feel as though something is not quite as it should be in her life and questions some of her usual choices, however, this does not necessarily mean that she can break the pattern, but when a chance meeting at a PR event turns her world upside down everything begins to change. At this point, Emily probably learns a very important lesson about actually knowing who you are emailing before you let them know every detail about each aspect of your life.

‘Girls Like Us’ is very funny and has many twists and turns in the storyline that kept me interested throughout the book. I was a little sceptical initially as it took me a couple of chapters to really get into it but it was well worth the wait as once I was ‘into it’ I was hooked!

I would love to read further material from Charlotte Ashby – her ability to make you laugh whilst following the dramas of her characters is just what is needed to help you relax with a good book on a rainy day – or even on a sun lounger in 30 degree heat 😉

I would give this book 4 out 5 stars and would happily recommend it to friends.
