Being a recent gin convert due to all the amazing flavours that are now available, I was pleased to receive a wonderful bottle of Unicorn Tears Raspberry Gin Liqueur from Firebox to review.
Renowned for selling unusual and quirky gift items, Firebox have certainly come up with a winner with their Unicorn Tears spirit range.
The item arrived safely and really well packaged with a protective inflatable sleeve, which was really impressive, to ensure that the bottle was safe within the packaging. Included amongst the packaging was a pretty fortune cookie gift. When I broke open the cookie, the inside slip contained a charming motto with a code which could be used online to get a £5 discount on your next purchase. What a great, unique marketing idea!
The Unicorn Tears Raspberry Gin Liqueur was a very pretty pink with added sparkle when you shook the bottle. With the recent interest in all things gin plus the desirability of unicorns, the product really encompasses both of these.
The print on the bottle explains how tears from rare breed unicorns are used to make such a sparkly mixture and when the bottle is shaken, the magical powers are released! OK, maybe a bit of imagination has been employed but it results in a very appealing and quirky gift. The bottle even reminds you to enjoy the magic responsibly! One small worry I had with this style of merchandising was how appealing this would be to youngsters with the unicorn picture and sparkly content!
After admiring the visual aspect of the bottle, I thought about how best to sample the sparkly gin. I initially decided to taste the gin on its own as being a liqueur I was unsure how sweet it would be. I was a bit disappointed that there was no raspberry scent when poured, you could only smell the gin. When I tasted it, it was very strong and not as sweet as other liqueur gins I had tried. The flavour however was very pleasant and left a lovely raspberry taste on the palate. I next tried adding elderberry tonic water which worked very well and made the gin more palatable. Due to a citrus sensitivity I am unable to have any citrus juices, but I feel that this gin would be great with lemonade to add a bit more sweetness. The final thing I tried was adding sparkling apple juice. This worked really well and made a lovely drink.
Firebox also do an original unicorn tears gin liqueur and a Black Unicorn tears gin liqueur (blackberry flavour) as part of their Mythical Tears spirit range. These liqueurs are also available from Firebox as miniature bottles, which is an ideal way to sample them before buying a full-sized bottle. This range is sure to be a popular line for the Christmas season. It would appeal to various ages and makes a wonderful girlie Christmas gift. A pink gin flavoured with sweet raspberries and juniper berries plus that extra bit of sparkle – a sure fire hit!
Overall a wonderful product. Very palatable and versatile. An ideal Christmas gift for the ladies in your family.
A ***** product.
