Firebox Spreadable Alcohol Review

Reviewed by Colin Hewitt

It’s that time of year again! The time when we start thinking about what gifts to buy people for Christmas (I know, I know, some of you will already have them chosen, purchased, and wrapped – but not me, I’m never that organised!)

There’s always somebody who’s a little tricker than others to choose for. That’s where the on-line company Firebox come in. They’ve a massive range of very unusual, and highly original gift ideas for every member of the family, from infants to adults with an extremely adult sense of humour.

I was recently sent a couple of jars from their spreadable alcohol range (Spreadable Whisky, and Spreadable Peach Bellini). Looking on the Firebox website, I can see that the full range includes everything from Mulled Wine to an intriguing Espresso Martini. All of these items are basically alcohol-infused marmalade.

Spreadable Whisky – Single Malt Marmalade:-

I never really doubted that I would like this product. I like marmalade. I love whisky. So, starting the day with a whisky marmalade, it seems ideal to me. For my taste, the flavour balance between the orange (a blend of Sweet and Seville oranges) and whisky was spot on. The Firebox website suggests trying it with some Roquefort or Monterey Jack cheese. But why not go the whole-hog? In addition to breakfast, add it to a dinner party cheese board, it would undoubtedly be a talking point.

Peach Bellini – Prosecco and Peach Marmalade:-

This one I had a few more reservations about. I’ve never ordered a Peach Bellini in a cocktail bar. I didn’t really know what to expect; however starting Christmas morning with Peaches and Prosecco, I can certainly appreciate that attraction in that.
It wasn’t as sweet as I expected and had a lovely taste of peaches. It was much runnier than most marmalades so could easily be poured over ice cream to make a gorgeous dessert. This product is suitable for vegetarians.

Both of these jars had a long shelf life (both well into 2022) which for this rather strange year might be more important than most. I’m not sure if I’ll be meeting up with my family over the Christmas period, and plans may change at very short notice. Therefore present exchanges may need to wait until later in the year, hence if you’re buying foodstuffs, a long ‘best before date’ is essential. They must also be refrigerated after opening.

The alcohol content for both products is extremely low (most, if not all of the alcohol is cooked off during production, so you don’t need to worry about any marmalade induced hangovers).

As with any food product, if you (or the recipient of your gift) have any food allergies, please contact the supplier or look at their website for full details, never leave it to chance.

My only reservation about these products is the price. £9.99 for a 225g jar is relatively expensive, but hey, they’re not for every day of the week, and if a day’s worth celebrating why not start at breakfast? These products aren’t just a novelty, they taste great as well.

Rating: A highly recommended 4/5
