I absolutely love the brand Orchard Toys. The quality is excellent, and the concepts of the games, toys and jigsaws are always clearly well thought out when it comes to children’s cognitive development and play. I was really excited to try this jigsaw out, and it didn’t disappoint; we had lots of fun.
As with all Orchard Toys products, this puzzle has been designed to support early learning and essential developmental skills through play. Children learn the concept of putting pieces together and completing the puzzle. At the same time, it supports key learning and developmental skills such as hand–eye coordination, concentration, patience and spatial awareness.
Children become engaged by the beautifully bright and colourful fairytale theme which helps to capture their imagination, especially through play and problem-solving, such as trying to complete the puzzle. They can create their own magical and mythical stories with the objects and characters displayed on the box and as they build the picture. The added bonus is the poster. Both the box and poster are a great way to encourage creative thinking and imaginative play. Having the poster means you can use the box to separate the pieces, i.e. edge pieces in one section of the box and the middle pieces in the other.
The best part about this jigsaw, which I’ve not seen before, is that each piece is numbered on the back. Not only does this help children to complete the puzzle on their own or with your help, it creates another use of the jigsaw. Once we completed it, we put it together again using the numbered side. You can encourage and engage with children to learn how to count and recognise the numbers. So, it’s like two jigsaws in one. Amazing!
As always, the quality and design are exceptional. The box is strong and sturdy, and the jigsaw pieces are of equally high quality. They are made from thick and durable card which means they will stand the test of time with repeated use and even if dropped. They fit together perfectly and securely without feeling difficult or hard to piece together. This gives children a real sense of achievement and helps build their confidence.
The illustrations are cute, bold in colour and magical. They are visually appealing and engaging, making the jigsaw not just fun to put together, but also encouraging imagination.
Learning through interactive play is incredibly important at this stage and there is so much that can be learnt through playing with it. Beyond completing the jigsaw, children can be encouraged to use their imagination through storytelling. It also encourages problem-solving and to think logically, whilst taking their time. All of this leaves children feeling proud of what they have accomplished as the picture comes together.
The good thing about jigsaws is that children can do them on their own, which gives them independence, allows them to work at their own pace and create their own stories. Doing it with someone else teaches the concept of sharing, taking turns to put the pieces together, as well as working together and helping each other. Both concepts give children the ability to think, concentrate and teach patience and problem-solving.
The box is durable and well made, making it perfect for storing all the pieces quickly and easily. Its compact size means it doesn’t take up much room when stored, making it ideal for travelling.
As always, Orchard Toys never disappoint. This jigsaw is excellent value for the price alone, let alone the multitude of uses alongside completing the puzzle. Combined with its durability, it is worth every penny. Whether for your own child or as a gift for someone else, you won’t be disappointed. Looking for the perfect present for a little one?
