Nowadays, Easter goes hand in hand with sweet treats, and like me you might be wondering how you can buy more ethically over this season.
Choosing chocolate eggs with the Fair Trade symbol is a fantastic start. Fair Trade means that everyone along the chain of production, including farmers and workers, is treated, and paid fairly for their produce and work. Because Fairtrade works closely with real people, it means that communities can thrive rather than survive.
All of the chocolate treats that I was invited to review are made with Fair Trade ingredients.

I was asked to review five of this year’s top Fairtrade treats!
Tony’s Chocolonely Caramel and Sea Salt egg
I love the ethics and story behind Tony’s and have been following the company for years now. I am really pleased that everyone is realising how nice their chocolate is.
The box is bright and colourful, packed with information about the company and their message, which is to raise awareness about modern day slavery and child labour in chocolate supply chains. They also fight to stop the unfairness in how much those along the production line are paid. By paying a higher price, to those who farm the cocoa, they hope to eventually eradicate slavery in the cocoa industry. Unfortunately my egg arrived broken so I couldn’t take a photograph, but I can assure you it tasted yummy.
This egg isn’t very big for the price, weighing 242g including the mini eggs which are included. However it does make up for this in flavour. It is chocolatey, creamy and the main egg has little bits of caramel and sea salt to add a lovely crunch. One thing I loved was that when I opened the box, the rich smell of chocolate filled my nostrils! The egg and the mini eggs, which were flavoured Milk chocolate, Caramel Sea Salt, White Chocolate Raspberry Popping Candy, Dark Chocolate and Pretzel Toffee and Dark Chocolate and Almond Sea Salt, were all excellent quality.
You can find the Tony’s egg in many supermarkets and online, with an RRP of £12. They cannot be purchased directly from Tony’s at the moment but can be found in many online retailers.

Despite the higher price point, which I think is more than justified when you read their company manifesto, I give this egg 5 out of 5 stars. I’d happily purchase this egg in the stores and would be elated to receive it for Easter.
Waitrose No1 range, The Cracking Pistachio egg
The egg itself is very aesthetically pleasing, I loved how they had the solid green egg inside the cracked one, made to look like a pistachio nut in its shell.
I really enjoyed the blondie outer egg, it was rich and creamy, almost like white chocolate but with lots more flavour. The Pistachio inner egg was my favourite part, as the little pieces of nut gave it a lovely texture. It did taste of pistachio, which made it a hit.
After eating almost half the egg, I did notice a very strange aftertaste which lingered for about an hour, but this might be because I ate so much of it in one go (it is so hard to stop eating this once you have started, it’s very yummy). I can only liken it to eating too much butter.
At £14, this one is also on the more pricey side and I think I agree with the price point again, however the strange aftertaste might make me think twice about purchasing one in the future. In small amounts though, it’s incredible. I give this egg 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Aldi Specially Selected Ruby and Raspberry Geometric egg
One thing I really liked about this egg, was the packaging, and the egg inside really was the same size as they picture on the box and looked exactly like it. It looked fantastic, pink with white chocolate swirls, and a funky sharp shape. It was the one which the family and I thought would taste the best if we had based it on looks only. Unfortunately, it didn’t meet expectations for us.
The actual chocolate, to me, didn’t really taste of anything at all. I didn’t get any hints of flavour from it and it didn’t have a chocolatey smell either. A bit like a cheap white chocolate with sweetness, but not a sugary sweetness, it’s hard to describe. Ruby Couverture Chocolate is creamy and milky, but I didn’t get that from this egg. Traditionally it tastes fruity and is often paired with fruit, I understand why as it really needed the fruit to bring it together.
The saviour for this egg, was the raspberry pieces, which were sharp, tangy, and juicy. I enjoyed the egg due to those pieces only, I wasn’t a fan of the chocolate alone. I wish I had more to say about this egg, as it really did look great, but the chocolate let it down.
I give this egg 3 out of 5 stars. It has a great price point at £3.99, and you do get a lot more egg for your money as it weighs 120g.
You can find the Geometric egg here https://groceries.aldi.co.uk/en-GB/p-specially-selected-ruby-raspberry-geometric-egg-120g/4061459908886 or in Aldi stores nationwide.
Divine Raspberry Flat Egg
Divine is a company which is co-owned my cocoa farmers, so their profits go right back into their community, which is fantastic. Divine and Kuapa Kokoo work together, and over a third of their 100,000 farmers are women, as are many of their CEO’s. They work hard to ensure women are empowered, as well as tackling poverty and climate change.
The product itself, is an egg shaped slab of chocolate, covered in freeze dried raspberries. It is also vegan, which is a bonus. The chocolate itself smells and tastes great, with 70% cocoa, it might be on the darker side for some, but personally I love dark chocolate. I liked how the raspberry flavours came through, they’re quite sharp, and I liked the texture of the raspberry pieces on top.
As Easter treats go, I was really pleased with this one.
I’d buy this product again, I feel it is a great addition to the Easter ranges and at 100g, weighs more than many eggs in the same price point. I do feel though, if I were to buy it, then I would go for the much cheaper Divine 70% cocoa and raspberry bar, which RRP’s at £2.40 for a 90g bar. The flat egg RRP’s at £5.50 for the 100g bar, but it is much more Eastery in shape and packaging design. I give this bar 5 out of 5 stars. It ticked all the boxes for me.

Divine Joyful Raisins and Spiced Hot Cross Bun Chocolate bar
Unfortunately I couldn’t eat this one as I have a gluten allergy, but it smells just like hot cross buns! Packed full of raisins, my husband (who tried it on my behalf) said that it was really tasty and reminded him of Christmas cake. The smell reminded me of German spiced cookies, which have a special place in my heart, so obviously I did enjoy smelling this one repeatedly even though I couldn’t eat it. Trust me, it smells so, so good! Which is one of the main factors in Easter treats I think.
The chocolate in this one is a lot smoother, being 32% cocoa, which appealed to my husband as he isn’t usually a fan of dark chocolate.
It has an RRP of £4.50, and my husband said that he’d be happy to purchase this bar again because it is different to many other bars on sale at the moment. It is a special treat.
He gave this bar 4 out of 5 stars, he did say that it got a little sickly after a while, but eating a square at a time and savouring the flavour was perfect. Find it here https://www.divinechocolate.com/
