EasyRead Time Teacher Watch Review

Reviewed by Amanda Hayes

The EasyRead Time Teacher watch (ertt) has been a fantastically easy way to learn how tell the time for my six year old. The watch comes in a colourful rectangular cardboard watch box with a clear panel to show the face and the colour of the strap. We got sent purple to review, which is a lovely vibrant colour with the fully washable strap made of strong webbing with a stainless-steel buckle. There are seven other colours in the watch range and you can also buy the replacement strap only where there is a choice of ten colours, adding different greens to the already large offering. The watch I received is water resistant, so fine for washing hands etc, but if you a prefer a waterproof option suitable for swimming there is one in the range at an additional cost of £10.00. If you have an active outdoorsy child it could be well worth the extra cost as its guaranteed waterproof to 50 metres and has recessed glass for protection from knocks and scratching.

The box claims that you can learn to tell the time in minutes in 3 easy steps, so with my son, Ethan, struggling a bit beyond the easy half past, quarter past times, I couldn’t wait to give it a go. The watch works on the Past & To Method with half the watch, the past side, coloured green and the other half, the To side coloured red (also available in rainbow colours). Inside the coloured bands are the minutes, counting up from 1-30 on the past side and down from 29 to 1 on the To side. The watch face is also clearly marked with the hours 1-12 and the words Past & To on the relevant sides. Ethan was excited to try the watch and it was really easy to fit and felt secure on his wrist. I explained to him about the colours and showed him the Past and To sides on the watch face. Straight away he got the hang of it as it’s so so simple to understand for children. If the big hand is on the green 25 its 25 past the hour, if it’s on the red 25 its 25 to the hour, it is really that simple. We have been using the watch all the time since using small tasks such as, can you tell me when its 10 to 5pm as that’s when I need to take something out of the oven. This has helped him quickly become familiar with the layout of the watch and although he still checks the minutes he now knows whether its past or to without checking the colour.

Ertt also have wall clocks in the Past-&-To range in English, French, Spanish & Italian, great if your child is learning a language. The other item in the range is the Easy Read alarm clock, with night light, beeping alarm and with a silent movement the ticking won’t keep them awake. All the above items including the waterproof watches are also offered in the 24 hour clock range. Based on a similar method it has the relevant 24-hour clock number, e.g. 13, against the hour 1 o’clock, and the number go round from 00 to 59. This enables the child to read 13.59 for instance, I may well move on to one of these as my son doesn’t get the 24-hour clock at all as yet and this looks like a simple way to learn. If it’s anything like the Past & To watches he should learn very quickly.

I am so glad to have been given the opportunity to try out the ertt watch, it has really changed the way we think about time and stopped the learning process becoming a chore. It’s a perfect starter watch for learning to tell the time and leading on to a more grown up watch, but it does not look babyish at all so will last a good few years. Its good quality, with a 12-month guarantee, and good value for money at £19.96 RRP and would make a perfect Christmas or Birthday gift with plenty of colours suitable for boys and girls.

The ertt (EasyRead Time Teacher) watch comes highly recommended by both me and Ethan.
