I have two daughters who, along with my husband and I, enjoy a sausage and egg breakfast muffin from a certain fast food restaurant. If it was up to them, they’d have one every single weekend, however due to the cost factor and not wanting them to eat junk all the time it ends up being an occasional treat. When I saw the Drew and Cole Breakfast Sandwich Maker, I knew it was something I had to try. I wanted to see if I could recreate breakfast muffins that were just as good but healthier and kinder to the purse strings.

When the sandwich maker arrived, I was struck by how small it was, it’s not very big at all and doesn’t take up a lot of space. It comes with a very useful manual which gives clear instructions on how to set up the sandwich maker, recipes and directions for how to clean the device. It was when reading the manual that I discovered my first disappointment, you can only use precooked meat in the maker. This meant that to recreate the fast food version I would have to cook the sausage patties separately before assembling the muffins.

Once the patties were cooked, I went back to the manual and followed the directions. When you plug the maker in and look at the top you will see two display lights, a red power light so you know it’s switched on and a green light that tells you when the maker has warmed up and its ready to start cooking. Once the green light was on, I placed one half of the English muffins, topped with a slice of cheese, inside the bottom ring. Then you pull down the next ring with a cooking plate, you can crack your egg directly onto this plate before topping with the other muffin half and pulling down the lid.

Once everything is assembled you leave the breakfast maker to work its magic for roughly 4-5 minutes. Once it’s all cooked you can slide out the middle cooking plate to release the egg before lifting all the rings and removing the muffin. The manual said it would be possible to lift all the rings at once, but I found you had to do it one at a time. It was still very easy to do.

The muffin was delicious, everything was cooked well and all the same temperature. We all really enjoyed them however the major downside was that we couldn’t all enjoy them together as the maker only makes one at a time. By the time the second one was made my husband had devoured the first one.

After nearly half an hour all four of us had enjoyed our muffins and it was time to clean the sandwich maker. It was really simple to remove all the rings and central cooking plate, the instruction manual said that the cooking rings were dishwasher safe, but I washed them by hand in hot soapy water. I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to clean.

Overall, we all enjoyed the sausage and egg muffins, and I would like to try some of the other recipes listed on the Drew and Cole app however I can’t see me using the sandwich maker for family breakfasts very often due to only being able to cook one at a time. It’s also frustrating that you can only use precooked meat, it sort of makes me think if I’m cooking the meat separately then I may as well just cook the eggs separately and assemble more than one sandwich at a time.
