Friday night we went to the Assembly Hall Theatre in Tunbridge Wells to see Killer Queen, a Queen tribute band. The Assembly Hall is a great venue with a large car park two minutes walk away which only costs £1.00 for the whole night, a well-stocked bar and comfortable seating.

The show started bang on time with a storming entrance from “Freddie, Brian, Roger and John” who had the place standing up and clapping within minutes of starting the show. There was a fantastic array of songs in the first half from Fat Bottom Girls to Another One Bites the Dust and Killer Queen, I was pleasantly surprised to find they played lots of the old stuff like Bicycle Race. The stage was backed by 3 large screens showing old Queen clips or large versions of the band playing, stadium style. The singing performance was broken part way through by a 5 minute interlude of excellent guitar playing and drumming by the two band members whilst Freddie had a rest.

After an hour there was a short interlude of around 20 minutes where we, and everyone else, rushed out to the bar as we were so thirsty from singing.

The second half was as good as the first with people leaving their seats and going down to the front to dance. They had another good selection of hits such as Somebody to Love and Don’t Stop Me Now and after about half an hour they left the stage. This obviously got everyone calling and stamping for more and the band were soon back on with Bohemian Rhapsody and another 15 minutes of music. Then they left again and came back to yet more stomping and screaming for a final encore with We Will Rock You, We Are The Champions and completed to the National Anthem with Freddie in a cape and crown.

Whilst the lead singer didn’t sound exactly like Freddie Mercury his style and mannerisms obviously styled on watching his performance and his showmanship was fantastic. We were also really impressed with “Brian May’s” guitar playing which was amazing. The band worked especially hard getting the whole audience up singing and clapping and it made for a great atmosphere.

A really great fun and enjoyable night, if you like Queen then try and see this band I highly recommend them.
