The calendar arrived by post in a cardboard box. On opening the box, the large calendar was revealed in perfect condition. Immediately you think of Christmas as on the front cover of the box is the classic picture of the Snowman hugging the boy Billy with his snow dog in front of a snowy yet starry sky and snow cladded hills in the background. The Snowman and the snow dog was produced in 2012 as an animated short film to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Snowman. There is a cardboard band holding the box closed which explains what a music box calendar is; where to press for music and what the doors when open reveal. On the back of this band is a little more detail of what you will find in the doors and information suggesting what you can do with some of the items. There is a warning of a choking hazard due to there being small parts in the box. This box is unsuitable for children under three years. Also there are battery instructions for when they need to replaced. Thankfully as I hate battery operated items without batteries in them this box has them! I removed the battery isolator tab as instructed.
Now for the exciting part, which is opening the box having removed the cardboard band. Once opened, the top helps to create the 3D scene with over half of the numbered doors. The scene shows a downhill snow slope marked out for the race and colourful lights attached to snow laden trees and red ribbons marking the finishing line. A snowman is floating in the sky holding up strings of more colourful lights. The top is kept in its upright position by a slender blue cotton ribbon. On the right hand side of the base at the front are the words “press here”. You can guess what I did! The music is a mixture of Christmas carols and songs and is very clear and not at all tinny which is often the sound from a “press here” device. The music lasts for 17 seconds unless you press down again.
All advert calendars have doors and there are normally 24 doors as the 24th December is the last day of advent but this is not sold as an advent calendar but as a music box calendar so it has 25 doors – an extra surprise! The doors are all shapes and sizes and I will not spoil your surprise if you are now going to get one. I have always disliked chocolate advent calendars preferring the picture ones and so like the fact there are a variety of magnetic dancing characters which can stand up on the base as well as a variety of 3D card models of objects and characters found in the film. These 3D models need to be put together and can also be placed on the base to create a more detailed scene. Also, stickers and children of all ages, (some adults too) love stickers. A really good mixture.
I think this music box calendar is good value for money as it can be reused as a Christmas scene in future years.
