After a long Summer holiday full of the usual treats of chocolate, sweets, cake and of course plenty of ice cream on the hot days it’s time for school to start again. Now we are into September and preparing for the new school term, it’s very important to me that my children return to their usual routines including their meals and snack times. I find this routine helps to keep them happy and focused at school and home.

After a long day at school my children always come home hungry despite receiving lunch and snacks whilst they are there. As young, growing boys they always need an after school snack to tide them over until dinner time. I am very conscious about the health of our family so it’s important to me that I provide my children with snacks that are healthy for their bodies, especially their teeth. Therefore I look for natural products which are low in sugar but it’s important to get the right balance between healthy and still being tasty so they will enjoy it. The Fruit Bowl peelers we have taste tested this week are just what we’ve been looking for.

Fruit Bowl produces a range of snacks, many of which we’ve previously tried with strawberry yogurt flakes being a firm favourite. The peelers come in three varieties – strawberry peelers, raspberry peelers and blackcurrant peelers. Each flavour is made with real fruit, either strawberries, raspberries or blackcurrants and squished together with apple and a little fruit juice. In fact each pack is made using one whole apple. This means that they count as one piece of fruit towards the recommended five a day. There is also no added sugar but they are still very sweet tasting from the naturally occurring sugars in the fruit. The ingredients are simple and there are no artificial flavourings or colourings and they are also gluten free and suitable for vegetarians. The Fruit Peelers come in colourful boxes as a pack of five. Each Fruit Peeler is individually wrapped and one 16g portion contains only 51kcal and just 9.3g of sugar.

As per their name, the peelers are designed to be ‘peeled’ and eaten in sections which my eldest son really enjoyed doing. However my youngest preferred to just bite chunks off! They were relished by both my children and when I tried one myself I could see why. They are sweet, chewy and satisfying. I feel they are an ideal snack for children for after school or lunch boxes. They are tasty, natural and it’s reassuring to know I’m giving my children a healthy snack. They are eating fruit without even realising! Plus the packets are very convenient to pop into a lunchbox or to have at hand at home.

Fruit Bowl Peelers are available to buy in store at Tesco, Asda, Morrison’s, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose. They are also available online at Ocado. They are priced at £2.25 for a box which I think is reasonable especially as they are made with high quality, natural ingredients . They are definitely a back to school essential for us so I will be filling our snack basket with them ready to refuel little tummies after school.
