Brewers Fayre Clayton Green Oldham Review

We went to review the Brewers Fayre chain at Chadderton, Oldham. There was plenty of parking but can imagine at weekends given the good food deals, this would be busy. The restaurant was busy when we arrived which gave a good sense that if people were filling the place, the food or atmosphere were good. On arrival, we were taken to a table which was in the middle of the pub but was fine for us. The manager went through how to order, what special offers were on and what time they finished and explained how we should order our food.

The menu was easy to follow from starters, mains, specials and then sides. There was also a fantastic deal of 2 for £10 mains but this had expired by the time we got there. The all you can eat deal was curry which none of us had but it smelt good. After reviewing the menu, I went to order which was at the bar and they can also take your drinks orders at the same time which saves going back up twice. It was easy to order, just remember your table number when you go.

I ordered lamb shank which came with a bed of mash, cabbage and a really rich gravy. The lamb melted off the bone and the mash was lump free and all really tasty. My husband opted for the mixed grill with all the trimmings you would expect, steak, chicken, sausage, gammon, eggs, onion rings and chips and as always the token garden peas. The steak was cooked rare and delicious and I knew this from pinching a piece!

My daughter had the nachos with cheese which came out really warm but after a while the nachos stuck together and you couldn’t get them apart without risk of them flying across the place. When they were warm though, they were nice and the guacamole was good (not that I was pinching food again!).

For dessert we had a warm chocolate brownie with ice cream which was sticky and rich. A bit too heavy for me but my husband loved it. I shared a Knickerbocker Glory with my daughter which had several ice cream flavours, banana, pineapple and chocolate sauce. A nice ending to a lovely meal.

I had wine which was reasonably priced, my daughter a J20 and my husband had a soft drink which was good value because it could be re-filled. There was also refill on coffee. There was a huge variety of drinks available.

There was a soft play area which was closing as we got there which I think meant there were more kids running round than maybe ordinarily but when you have your own there, in most instances you can be quite forgiving. However, I don’t think this was the time to go if you wanted a romantic meal for two…

There were some bigger parties in whilst we were there and they did complain (whether rightly or wrongly I don’t know). However, the manager dealt with these really well and all seemed happy again in no-time. The rest of the staff were attentive and cleaned up quickly after people had left.

Overall an enjoyable meal and I will definitely be returning. I would recommend this as a good place to eat for Father’s Day (21 June). A solid 4 out of 5 for me.
