Pixie Lott gave a truly amazing performance as Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s last night at the Theatre Royal Haymarket!
From the moment the curtains opened to Pixie Lott singing Moon River we were there in New York with Fred, sheltering from the rain in a bar. We lived Holly and Fred’s lives with them.
Holly Golightly was a beautiful, lively young woman who lived by her wits in New York and used her looks to attract men. She lived on the money she managed to extract from them for the bathroom or for a taxi. She loved parties. Her life wasn’t always simple, sometimes she got herself into difficulties!
Matt Barber was a wonderful and faithful Fred, such a good friend to Holly Golightly, how he loved her! Victor McGuire who played Joe Bell also loved her, but in a different way. She was the kind of woman who attracted men. Tim Frances gave a wonderful portrayal of Rusty! I felt so sorry for Doc played by Robert Calvert. What a fabulous cat Bob the Cat was!!
I must also mention Katy Allen, Naomi Cranston, Charlie De Melo, Andrew Joshi, Melanie La Barrie, Sevan Stephan and Andy Watkins were all fantastic in their roles.
Pixie Lott was on stage the majority of the time, I have no idea how she had time for some very quick changes. Her guitar accompaniment to People Will Say We’re in Love and Moon River was fantastic.
The run down apartments Holly Golightly and Fred lived in were so credible with their peeling wallpaper and stains. The scene changes were so cleverly done and were so slick. The costumes were authentic to the time and place. Holly Golightly had an extensive attractive wardrobe!
Richard Greenbergs adaptation of Truman Capote’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s is definitely a success! I can truly recommend it.
Theatre Royal Haymarket is a wonderful 19th century theatre. My 13 year old stage mad granddaughter who accompanied me thoroughly enjoyed the show and could not take her eyes off Pixie Lott, she thought she was wonderful and enjoyed every minute! She told me afterwards that she could not believe she was so close Pixie Lott! In the bar she whispered that she felt like she was in a ‘posh hotel’!!
I can thoroughly recommend this show, there was nothing about it to dislike or criticise.
