With summer arriving and more time spent in the garden, as well as hopeful trips to the beach planned, I was keen to receive BIOPlastic bucket set made by dantoy to review for my family.  The parcel arrived simply but well wrapped with no damage in transit. The item itself is nicely presented in a cardboard only box (great to see that no unnecessary plastic was used in the wrapping!), with an open viewing area to be able to see and touch the items.

The gift set that I received contained a mini bucket, mini spade, mini rake and mini watering can- so the full set needed for little ones to play in the sand or water or ‘help’ out in the garden. My first impression was of the delightful and unusual colour palette where a range of pastel type shades mixed with a ‘flecked’ effect (to look more natural and recycled) really make them different. Whilst I am aware bright colours are often appealing to children, the colours used look more ‘grown up’ which I think often appeals to toddlers or children as they start to copy adults more. They also look very modern and stylish which I as a parent definitely prefer to cheap and tacky looking children’s toys!

The items themselves are made purely from sugarcane so considered BIOPlastic (plastic materials produced from renewable biomass source) and therefore eco friendly. The box advertises how the toys are made from 100% renewable raw materials (from a residual product from sugar cane production), are 100% recyclable and 90% biobased. The items are also made using a life cycle assessment (LCA) technique where potential environmental aspects and impacts are reviewed across all stages of its production. A clear cycle is shown on the back of the packaging box showing how the items are made from waste sugarcane materials and then the new growing sugarcane also helps absorb C02 from the air. I really like the idea of waste materials being put to such good use rather than creating more unrecyclable items (which feature heavily in the children’s toy market!).

The mini bucket is the perfect size for little ones to carry around, fill and tip. The rake and spade are also suitably sized and can easily be handled by little hands as are very light weight. Whilst the mini watering can also fits all of these points I did notice one little problem- the watering holes on the end are at the the top which means in order to pour the water out the angle required will also allow water out of the open top. This shouldn’t be an issue if the watering can is only partly filled, however children seem to love to fill it right up to the top and this leads to a lot of mis spilled water (not necessarily a problem in water play but just something I noticed).

All of the items seem very sturdy and although I haven’t had them for long I can see them being used regularly and lasting for a very long time. Another plus in my book! The way each item is designed also means that it seems unlikely that any part can be broken or snapped off during play. I felt that the set was great value for money, especially given the use of eco-friendly materials which you often end up paying a high premium for.

A great gift for your own or other’s children which will provide hours of entertainment for years to come with little to no negative impact on the environment.

My little boy and I would give this bucket gift set a rating of 4.5 out of 5.
