Playmonster My Living World Bug Photography Kit Review

Forget this toy for the kids, I would be very happy to keep this for myself! Lol.  As an immature photographer, I have a real passion for close up and portrait photographs, so I was very keen and eager to try this out and I was not disappointed. To say that you can take close-up photos of bugs and insects is an understatement and with the My Living World Bug Photography kit, you most certainly will not be disappointed and the smiles on children’s faces will speak volumes.

So, with 5 grandchildren in tow, we set off on a very long walk, longer than we planned, in and around my village where we put the equipment to the test. When I say longer than planned, I mean, after 4.5 hours. I had allowed approximately an hour or so, thinking the children would get bored very quickly, how wrong was I.

There is a pot which you use to collect the bugs and insects and this is very easily done by using the very tiny little brush that is included in the kit. The pot also acts like a viewing pot and it is with this, that the children can get up very close and look at the bugs with the built-in magnifier.

Now, this is where the photography bit comes in and is awesome. There is a capture cap and a macro lens clip which attaches to your phone and amazingly, can take 10 x and 20 x magnified photographs. 

What better way to educate, interact, teach and learn about the bugs and insects you find, by looking at and reading the bug guide which is written by Nick Baker who is a nature expert. The guide has an amazing 18 page booklet with instruction and some great fun facts which are guaranteed to really make bug and inspect findings fun, exciting and educational. I was really taken aback and very surprised at how excited they all got, more so than when we are our for our walks.

Before placing the bugs and insects into the viewing pot, we made sure that we placed some sticks / twigs and even some leaves and soil. We wanted to make sure the bugs and insects were not disrupted too much and wanted the viewing pot to make them feel more at home.

A mentioned above, there are 2 different sized lenses to capture the moments and these are astounding. I was really surprised at the quality of the lens and how much each size lens captured the bugs and insects. The children managed to get some amazing close up pictures and the details was phenomenal. We have decided to print the pictures off and put them in a photo album for each of them.  I love the fact that there is a suction cup which supports the clip and you can easily move it around.

I found it really easy to work out which lens was the correct one and to zoom was easy too. If you are not familiar with something like this, it may take you a while but persevere, it will be worth it and you will be glad that you did. Depending on your phone you may have to adjust your phone accordingly but again, be patient, you will be surprised with the results.

Age: 6+ years. On the box, Play Monster say that it is not suitable for children under 36 months. This is due to the small parts that may represent a choking hazard.
