Yesterday, me and my 3-year-old son took a trip out to St. Helens Theatre Royal to watch Ben & Holly’s Little Kingdom Live on Stage.
Watching Ben & Holly on tv most days, we are both very familiar with the characters and the cast and production team did an excellent job of bringing them to life.
The show was split into two 30-minute halves, with a 15-minute interval halfway through which was just the right length given that most of the audience was of pre-school age.
The show is based on around three or so episodes blended together so we were quite familiar with them all.
The first half of show featured multiple games that Ben and Holly played – hide and seek and fetch, then along with Nanny Plum’s help and a little bit of magic they tidied Gaston’s cave. Then Nanny Plum took Ben and Holly along with her to be the tooth fairy where they met Lucy and flew her back to the Little Kingdom.
The second half featured plans for King Thistle’s birthday which featured the elf band practicing ‘I am the music man’ but King Thistle had a cold, so Ben, Holly, Lucy and Nanny Plum went around the Little Kingdom collecting ingredients for a magic spell to cure King Thistle’s cold. Obviously, no birthday party in the Little Kingdom would be complete without a jelly flood!
The show contains lots of singing, and great audience participation that my 3-year-old thoroughly enjoyed joining in with.
We would rate it 5 out of 5 and judging by the faces of most of the other little ones in the theatre so would they!
