With Christmas fast approaching around the corner, I am sure like many I am starting to keep an eye out for good Christmas gifts. I personally find the men in my life often the hardest to buy for as they tend to get what they need or want throughout the year. Barbour handkerchief sets therefore provide a practical yet stylish gift option. Posted in simple packaging and contained within a plastic box meant that I was disappointed to find that my gift set unfortunately arrived slightly damaged on the left hand side bottom corner. The handkerchiefs themselves are certainly not damaged in anyway, but for a gift I would have hoped that the packaging ensures it remains pristine in transit which is unfortunately not what happened. To be honest I think Barbour could improve the packaging to firstly be more environmental using cardboard, but I think this would also create more of a ‘gift set’ look, which many other brands often do.

The gift set itself contains 3 handkerchiefs, all with the same modern white polka dot and stripe design in red, navy and dark green. They colours are very vibrant and rich, fitting with the brands usual stylish designs. As hoped they are 100% cotton and ironable on a low setting. However, they do state to be handwash only which is a shame, given practicalities and what they are used for I would personally prefer them to be machine washable. Having only had them a week, they haven’t had a chance to be fully tested in terms of the colour lasting over frequent washes but I have no reason to believe they wouldn’t uphold the usual quality expected of Barbour. They seem large in size (measuring 51x51cm or 20x20inch) so certainly sufficient for use.

The handkerchief gift set also comes in a range of four different iconic tartan patterns which are less modern in look but perhaps more traditional. A paisley set is also available so there is plenty of choice to find the perfect pattern for your gift receiver. Other accessory options on the Barbour website include hat, glove and scarf sets as well as a wide range of scarfs.

The brand Barbour was founded in 1894 with the aim to maintain principles including quality, durability, attention to detail and fitness for purpose. Aside from the gift set packaging which I think could be improved and the need to hand wash, I think these items stick to Barbour’s original principles. Advertised as a stocking filler, I think for many this maybe a little over the budget for these traditionally additional little gifts but they do make a good gift aside from this.

Overall, I would recommend this set as a Christmas gift idea for any gentlemen in your life as whilst practical and therefore you know they will put them to use, the price means they are less likely to purchase directly for themselves and the brand Barbour makes the gift of a certain calibre.
