Avocado Garden are an independent restaurant, focused on fresh, healthy, organic food located in south-east London’s beautiful Blackheath area. Although restaurants may now be open, I was offered the chance to review their delivery menu and couldn’t wait.
The menu is as appetising as it was varied. Breakfast and brunch are served until 1pm including everything from your usual bacon baguettes and avocado on toast to smoked salmon on charcoal bread and caramelised banana parfait – deliciously diverse! They also have a sumptuous sounding array of gourmet sandwiches and toast, bar snacks and sharing platters, burgers, Buddha bowls and desserts. They’re also now offering picnic hampers for collection from £50 and they sound absolutely stunning!
I was ordering for dinner so I focussed on the main course-style menu items – there was almost too much choice but I eventually decided upon the Guacamole with Totopos (£9.50), and a Buddha bowl with brown rice, grilled steak, avocado cream, cherry tomatoes, black bean and corn salsa, and fresh sliced avocado (£14.95). For dessert I was intrigued (and excited) by the avocado ice cream (£5.25).
The delivery arrived promptly just after 6pm, and everything was invitingly laid out – I couldn’t wait to dive in! The Totopos and guacamole came in separate containers, and the Buddha bowl was appetizingly arranged. The avocado ice cream arrived in a small silver container which I popped it in the freezer so it would still be in one piece when I made it to dessert.
My first impressions were that the portions were all really generous. There was plenty Totopos to go split between me and my partner, and the tub of guacamole that accompanied the tortillas was huge, and I can tell you now, it was divine. It was super fresh, creamy and the right balance of zingy – so flavourful! It disappeared easily along with the tortillas, and I only wish I’d added a side of Pico de Gallo as the menu suggests.
The Buddha bowl was also a decent sized portion. There was a reasonable amount of rice, topped with handfuls of the mouth-wateringly fresh ingredients I had selected, and covered in silky avocado cream. Absolutely scrumptious, and definitely a dish to recommend.
As I mentioned, I also opted for the avocado ice cream too and it really looked like a half avocado! The velvety smooth green ice cream was nestled in a chocolate avocado half cup and to my surprise, it really did taste like avocado. Accompanied by the crisp dark chocolate, it was divine.
For those of you who aren’t local, or can’t make it to the restaurant in person, Avocado Garden offers collection or delivery. For delivery orders they ask for a min of £20 plus £3.95 delivery charge. They’re open from Monday – Sunday 8am – 7.30pm, covering the Blackheath area, and as far as Peckham, Isle of Dogs, Eltham and Sundrige. You can either place an order over the phone, or online via their website.
Whether you’re a local or from further afield, I’d recommend a visit to, or a delivery from, the delightfully fresh, Avocado Garden.
