Winter Gardens in Blackpool Is a traditional theatre with a circular auditorium, decorative plasterwork both around the stage and on the walls and ceiling.

Upon arrival to the theatre we were greeted by the manager at the ticket desk who was friendly and handed us our tickets. A steward showed us which way we needed go to our seats. Slightly confusing seating numbers as the seating is divided one side odd to the other even.

Once seated the chairs where comfy even though there wasn’t much leg room. We was positioned central towards the rear but still had a great view of the stage.

Avenue Q is a comedy musical staged on set made to mimic a street with a view of the skyscrapers of New York looming over the rooftops. With puppets, inspired by Sesame Street, adult versions of Bert and Ernie and a Cookie Monster type who is obsessed with porn. Exploring the post education pre career gap that people go through in their early twenties it’s funny, cleverly staged, and has songs that stick with you. Using a mix of puppets and actors it establishes a world of its own populated by recognisable character types, even if they are in puppet forms. Dilemmas include the journey to self-awareness of a repressed gay man and his overly helpful best friend/roommate, whether racial jokes are ever acceptable, and why it’s tempting but unhealthy to look to the past as being glorious and thinking today terrible.

Half way through the performance there was an interval which was great as it gave us time to stretch our legs and get refreshments.

It ends with a song, For Now that is brutally honest (“Each time you smile/it’ll only last a while”) but is comfortingly reassuring that as much as the good times pass by, so do the bad times. It’s the song equivalent of a hug by an old friend.

Thank you for a night of entertainment. Avenue Q is a fantastically funny show.
