All Neat in Black Stockings is part of “The British Film” collection from Network based on the novel by Jane Gaskell. This 1968 comedy drama starring Victor Henry and Susan George has had a brand new transfer to DVD and is available to buy from 27 January 2014.
Ginger (Victor Henry) is a 20 year old womanising, window cleaner in London and shares everything with his friend Dwyer (Jack Shepherd) including girlfriends. After yet another date he meets the innocent Jill (Susan George) in a pub who is “all neat in black stockings”. After dating her friend he finally plucks up the courage to ask her out (a problem he doesn’t usually have).
He soon realises Jill is much more than just another conquest and falls in love for the very first time. Jill is a virgin and while Ginger is waiting for the right time his friends Dwyer gets her pregnant. As Ginger loves her so much they get married and he takes on the baby as his own.
Overall, this a part bawdy sexual adventure with Ginger’s womanising ways and complete lack of respect for women and part drama when he finally falls in love and into a monogamous relationship. A good mix of comedy and drama and interesting viewing.
