Aladdin at the Charter Theatre Preston Review

7 December 2017 to 3 January 2018

Superb entertainment for all!

After seeing Jack and the Beanstalk at the Charter Theatre, Preston last year and thoroughly enjoying it, it was difficult for me to see how that could be topped this year. But it could, and it was!

Phil Walker (plays Wishee Washee) managed to do it again. The banter between him and Jeffrey Longmore (plays Widow Twankee) was top form and seemingly unrehearsed which was fresh and original. I particularly enjoyed the references to the local area.

We all know the story of Aladdin and it was stuck to rigidly. This was great as it allowed for creativity and spontaneity throughout the pantomime.

The choreography by Nicky Figgins was energetic and mesmerising. The little kids were great and looked like they were loving life. One of my favourite scenes was the magic ride to the sounds of Coldplay. The audience was captivated as the carpet transported Aladdin (played by Carl Tracey) and Jasmine (played by Stacey Mcclean) over the audience as if by magic. I noted that some wheel chair users were on the top tier and they were really involved with the scene as the characters glided right by them. There were waves and smiles all around. The spectacular special effects were created by freedom flying and the Twins FX. Other effects included bangs, sparks and even flames when Abanazar (played by Paul Zenon) opened his book of magic.

My absolute favourite scenes involved PC Pong (played by Marvyn Dickinson), Wishy Washee and Widow Twankee. The mood of the audience hit the ceiling as their natural performances excited the audience. There was clearly an excellent relationship with all the cast members who genuinely looked like they were enjoying themselves. Their energy and enthusiasm were contagious as the audience sang and laughed throughout the performance.

It had all the ingredients of an excellent pantomime with one liners, audience participation and water guns.

This is an absolute must see pantomime for all the family and we are now well and truly, in the Christmas spirit.

Rating: 5/5
