If you’re even slightly into baking, portion control, or tracking your nutrition, a decent kitchen scale can quietly become one of your most-used tools. I was given the AENO Smart Kitchen Scales KS1S to review and the “smart” element piqued my interest, and honestly, it’s been a good little addition to the kitchen.
Design-wise, the KS1S is slick and modern. It’s got a glass surface with a clear LED display that only lights up when in use, and it’s compact enough to slide into a cupboard or leave out without it looking cluttered. It also has a reassuring weight to it, light enough to move, but sturdy enough to stay put while you’re weighing ingredients.
One thing I appreciate straight off the bat: physical buttons. There are two, one for switching units and one for the tare function. They’re responsive, clicky in a satisfying way, and much more reliable than the touch-sensitive ones some other models use. In a kitchen where your hands might be damp, floury, or somewhere in between, it’s nice not to have to fiddle with a touch panel.
Functionally, the scales are solid. They measure up to 5kg and cover all the expected units—grams, ounces, pounds, and millilitres. I’ve tested them and they’ve stayed accurate and quick to respond. The tare function works instantly and resets cleanly. No lag, no weird recalibrations.
Now onto the “smart” bit, because, let’s be honest, it’s what gives this scale its edge. The KS1S connects to the AENO app via Bluetooth, and here’s where things can get either useful or a bit overkill, depending on your style. Once connected, the app automatically logs your food weights and allows you to select what you’re measuring. It then breaks down the nutritional content, calories, protein, fat, carbs, based on a database of common foods.
It’s not quite as slick as a dedicated nutrition tracker, and you do have to manually search or confirm the item you’re weighing. But for people counting macros or watching intake for medical or fitness reasons, it could be helpful. You can set goals, track your intake throughout the day, and even store commonly used foods for quicker input next time.
The app isn’t perfect. It’s not the most intuitive interface, and I found myself tapping around a bit too much trying to find what I needed. But once I got the hang of it, it did its job well enough. The real-time sync with the scale is a nice touch, it just takes some patience if you’re not used to pairing tech with cooking.
Battery-wise, it uses 3 AAA batteries. The screen, while crisp and clear indoors, can get a bit washed out in very bright light, especially if it hits at the wrong angle. Again, not a dealbreaker, but worth knowing.
So, is it life-changing? No. But it is one of those gadgets that does what it says on the tin, with just enough smart functionality to make it feel like a small upgrade to your kitchen. The physical buttons make it easy to use without fuss, and the app adds a layer of insight for those who want to engage with it.
For everyday cooking and occasional nutrition tracking, the AENO KS1S is a solid, no-fuss scale with a smart twist that doesn’t try too hard. It won’t turn you into a culinary genius, but it might help you feel a little more in control of your kitchen (and your macros).
